The tone is set at home. If parents know their kids are skipping classes, they are our biggest ally to get them back into class.

We realize that intentional absences are a problem here, as they are in all school systems in Georgia. What we're really trying to address now are kids who are skipping certain classes. They're out one block and back the next one.

There needs to be a commitment to fund an annual class, but before that, there needs to be back-to-back classes or overlapping classes to even reach 1,248.

We have actually been able to put more teachers back in the budget, and we have addressed class size issues, which was one of the biggest concerns of parents.

Our weaknesses are that we are young. Some of the events like math, our kids just haven't taken those classes yet. That's probably going to be our biggest weakness. They are younger so some of them haven't even had a speech class which is a big event. We're having to go over a lot of things with them such as basic speech.

It started out asking me if I could come teach one class on grain bin rescue. Then three day classes. Then they added four separate night classes for area firefighters. Now they are asking if I can come back.

Home school is very comparable to school: They have a schedule, classes and assignments; they have textbooks and tests, They just have smaller classes, and sometimes that means a class of one.

We want parents to talk to kids. It's free speech. We can't stop students from participating. But if they do this, first of all, it's skipping school. And second, talk to them about safety. If you're walking across town, be careful.

One of the biggest ironies about this weekend is some of the kids who will be brought to the cleanup by their parents will be some of the ones involved (in illegal activity) and the parents are unaware.

It is the biggest thing, ... Honestly, most people cannot afford it. Ours was on the cheaper side and it was between $15,000 and $25,000 (US). It's really too bad the federal government doesn't give adoptive parents a tax break. More people would do it, and there are so many kids that need a home.
