Chris has been around here a long time, and one of the pluses of having a veteran backup is they've been there before. He's been with us, he's been with the team, he's been in the system, and I think he executed it very well.

The current system is much more competitive in the front office. It's always been easy to get talent and keep talent through the draft. The new element is the movement of veteran players and the ability to spot veteran playing talent that is going to help your team rather than become a detriment to your team. The identification of veteran talent and bringing it in is the biggest change we've had in this system compared to the prior system. The heart of the problem was a backup system did not kick in as it was supposed to do. We are investigating both things. One, why did we have the original issue, and then why did the backup system not work in this case?

Losing Chris was a tough break and I really didn't know how the team was going to react. It took a long time to adjust to playing without Chris, but the kids have bounced back and that's a credit to their hard work and determination.

If the veteran only has a year or two left on his contract, teams are hesitant to trade a draft pick for a player in that position. Why pay a big cap number for a guy you might only have for a short time? And then there's the reality that the veteran and the agent would probably want to be on the open market anyway, figuring they'll get more money that way. The system is not conducive to making a deal for a veteran.

Chris is very capable of taking our troops, as all our guys are. Chris is our veteran. He's been around certain situations a while, so he understands about guys getting hurt and how to help other players. (Sunday) night was a perfect example of Chris leading us.

Todd brings a veteran presence to the team and he'll be one of the catchers in the competition for the backup spot behind Mike Matheny.

Once our conference meet rolls around (Oct. 22), I think we'll be ready to go. One of the pluses of our team is that it is a positive group and very supportive, which will make us a stronger team in the long run.

The long-term question for Nielsen to answer is: Where is the redundancy? To operate on a real-time basis, doesn't a system have to have a backup redundancy built in?

It's amazing to know that we have so many players with so much potential. The team's going to go a long way for a long time. It gives us great confidence, that if one of our starters gets hurt, we've got an amazing backup who's ready to stand in there and take over.

Their big men played well. They executed their stuff to a T. They shared the ball and just did everything they needed to do to win. That's something a veteran team like us should be doing, but a young group like that is doing it.

Chris will be Chris. When it was close we pulled away and executed.

He's a professional hitter, he's a guy that's going to put the ball in play. He's a tough out when he comes up to bat; he's not going to give away at-bats. The thing that we've got right now, we've got quite a few veteran guys for our bench, which has a lot of pluses.

It is something Chris has been thinking about for a long time. I think part of it did come from the flow of conversation. Chris is a person who says what he believes. When asked a question, he is not going to lie, not going to beat around the bush.

After long and serious deliberation, the men's basketball staff has dismissed Chris Rodgers, effective immediately, from the team. It should be noted that Chris has earned his college degree in three and a half years and that we wish him much success in all future endeavors.
