en So I was really composing for full orchestra and of course I didn't know enough chords or harmonies yet but I came up with some interesting stuff.

en Composing is as important to me as playing. My feeling is that playing and composing support and nourish each other. I'd be a lesser player if I didn't write, and a lesser writer if I didn't play. Composing is tremendously difficult and painful for me, and I often go to great lengths to avoid it.

en Many people believe that composing 'Concerto for Orchestra' kept Bartok alive through his final years of a battle with leukemia.

en Thirty is a full orchestra, but we want to have a big orchestra.

en We've done a couple dates with them in the past, and we've always been big fans. We [wanted] to do something a little different for the show. I was just thinking he'd do some harmonies and stuff, and he was like, 'I've got some stuff I wanna sing.' So he kind of went off and sang some melodies that he had made up, and they were really cool.

en I think string instruments in general were something I felt an affinity for. I liked the bass. I was a rhythm guitarist and the bass seemed a more interesting thing to do than play chords. It didn't have the high profile of the lead guitarist, but I wasn't really ready for that at the time. It seemed to suit my personality.

en We will walk through with the students on what we are composing and why we are composing it. We will work to make sure they are in support of our proposal.

en The most interesting aspect for me, composing exclusively with patterns, is that there is not one organizational procedure more advantageous than another, perhaps because no one pattern ever takes precedence over the others.

I'm doing the rhythm notes, and it's easy to get the feel for the song if someone's doing the chords. It's the same thing [as the guitar] without chords.

en We need to show people that we're back, that we are right up there doing cutting-edge stuff and stuff that is interesting and looks beautiful to anyone, ... Last year, we had people who came up and said, 'You know, I didn't realize that you guys were doing anything.' Swear to God. People really thought we were out of business.

en There's a great difference between having 20 in an orchestra and having 70 in an orchestra. Seventy is a big sound, a symphony orchestra sort of size, and 20 is a lot more intimate, and you can hear a lot more of the individual instruments rather than the wash of symphonic sound. It depends on what you want to do.

en We've been writing some different stuff - odd time signatures - so it's a little bit darker with different scales and chords than we normally work with.
