Taxes, Social Security and health care are a heavy burden on emerging and growing businesses. In calling for reform in all these areas, business owners are saying that they want relief -- a simpler system that will allow them to focus more on the needs of their businesses.

Half the businesses we surveyed are family-owned. About a quarter of these owners expect to retire or sell sometime in the next five years -- but only 13 percent expect the businesses to stay in the family -- with 35 percent having no idea what they will do or expecting to close down. Owners often spend an entire lifetime building their businesses -- but rarely give thought to what will happen when they are ready to retire. As a family-owned business ourselves, we strongly encourage businesses to start planning now -- to minimize taxes and address other financial and emotional considerations.

Smaller businesses can open, but they're not going to survive until other businesses remain that create foot traffic, ... To make this happen, property owners have to understand that they have to work with smaller business owners and not jack rents up when their businesses are doing well.

My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. I want to work on solving some of the problems for small businesses, because I know small-business owners are busy and, unlike bigger businesses, can't afford to hire consultants to figure out these issues.

The lack of security awareness among small businesses is a growing concern. With continued focus on education efforts tailored for the small business community, we hope to increase understanding and provide small businesses with the basic tools necessary to run their organizations securely and productively.

Our survey showed that most businesses lump taxes and fees together, and this is their fastest growing expense category ? matched only by the cost of health care.

We spend a lot of time explaining the permit process to business owners and potential business owners. And while we are busy trying to attract new businesses to Southlake, we try to be aware of the needs of our existing businesses. Sometimes it is a real juggling act.

These policies include making tax relief permanent, reducing the budget deficit by limiting spending, strengthening retirement and health security through efforts like Social Security reform ... and enhancing energy security.

Reform is critical if we are to encourage businesses to offer a pension benefit now, while many workers still have time to build for their retirement. Without reform, more workers will be forced to rely on Social Security, which is already facing financial difficulty.

It's always pleasing to hear we have a low tax burden. The governor is very conscious of the tax burden that both businesses and individuals pay. That's why the governor will do everything he can before raising taxes, including looking for ways to close loopholes that allow some to avoid taxes.

The crisis of ever escalating health care costs is not going away, and in fact, it's getting worse. Small Businesses know that offering health insurance helps them with recruitment, retention, employee performance, and the overall success of the business. This is something I firmly believe Congress should address right now. Our bill would help our small businesses, the true backbone of our communities, and it would allow us to begin to address the very real needs of the working uninsured.
