The concern we have is that there are a lot of companies that don't see it coming. This is a big elephant. It's coming right at the American manufacturer. Based on input from many sources, we are guessing 40 percent or more of the manufacturing industry doesn't get it.

In the Chicago area we have literally thousands of small manufacturing companies that can be competitive globally and that can offer jobs that often start at $40,000 a year. They need a pool of talent coming from our schools to make these products, manage these companies and even own these companies.

There's all kinds of research that shows this is a different generation of people coming to work for us. Companies that can demonstrate to their employees that they have genuine concern for an employee's ability to give 100 percent to the job and still have a life is very critical.

We've seen growth and a real doubling of funding in all sectors. The proportions are really unchanged over the decade, with roughly 60 percent coming from industry and the remainder coming from government and foundations.

You have to be careful that your entire strategy doesn't depend on one industry. But manufacturing is still a vital part of the American economy.

The marketplace and our own research have made it clear that the industry prefers one main industry event. Based on the industry's input, we will be refocusing all of our resources to produce Macworld in San Francisco.

The overall benefit to the state in keeping manufacturing companies and jobs in Connecticut can not be overstated. Although we have lost manufacturing jobs over time, manufacturing still makes up nearly 20 percent of our gross state product, and each manufacturing job supports many more jobs in support and related industries.

Communities that insist on clinging to traditional, extraction-based economies are asking for stagnation, ... Those industries will inevitably mechanize, exhaust their resources and decline, eliminating jobs and stalling out economies in their wake. In order to stimulate lasting economic growth and ensure a strong future for coming generations, jobs, industry and income sources must continually diversify.

We'll have about 100,000 customers, with 40 to 45 percent order entry coming from the market. New sources of revenue with high margins will be developed.

It's certainly disappointing by any measure, ... I think the industry is going to be close to flat, with a zero- to-1 percent rise. Coming in, we thought the month would be up 2 to 3 percent.

The 3 percent charge has been coming into effect over the past year, but a lot of smaller banks and credit unions only charge the 1 percent, and American Express is still at 2 percent.

I think this is a positive development for both the companies and the industry. The companies are now moving together, looking at a difficult environment for refining and marketing and coming up with proactive ways to combine their entities and hopefully improve their profitability.
