For a president who came from the oil business and who still has many friends and backers in the industry, putting this initiative at the top of his agenda took some guts.

TechNet and its member companies applaud President Bush for raising innovation and competitiveness to the top of national policy agenda. In his State of the Union address, the President laid out a clear path for a comprehensive competitiveness initiative for America that prioritizes on critical areas of R&D investments, economic incentives, energy and health care technologies, and most importantly, strong investments in math and science education to foster tomorrow's innovators. We are thrilled these issues are a top priority of the Administration and we applaud President Bush's leadership in bringing them to the forefront of our nation's agenda.

When the president's agenda didn't have full support by Republicans in the House, he made sure it gets done and passes. He got everything from the president's tax relief to Bush's money for AIDS initiative in Africa. For DeLay, success begot success. Once he was able to deliver on a few big things early on in the Republican majority, it built upon itself.

This should not be about just saying no to any agenda that the president puts forward. The president's agenda is really the American agenda. He campaigned on it, the people expect him to put it forward and he will,

It was somewhat surreal to think that HIMSS first launched its advocacy initiative just a little over five years ago and here we are today meeting in the White House with the President's key HIT policy advisors on our members' advocacy agenda.

What President Bush will outline is not only an agenda for America, but, obviously, an agenda for his own party to provide an optimistic forward-looking set of proposals.

They have been dealt a bad hand the last couple months. But now, hopefully, this special prosecutor business is not at the top of the news and they can get back to their agenda, as the president has tried to do this week with speeches on terrorism and Iraq.
