Energy's off a little ordsprog

Energy's off a little bit today, but it doesn't mean that energy is going back down. We're starting into an earnings season and earnings will start to have an effect.

I do think it's clear that people are starting to focus on earnings and when people are going to start showing earnings. Although Yahoo! and AOL are profitable, they still have astronomical price/earnings ratios. It's going to be a while before earnings catch up to valuations.

You can pick you poison today from anywhere. The earnings concern and lack of guidance for 2006 concerns tech players. But the story goes beyond that to energy pricing, which is still a 2005 perspective. Once again, energy is the leading sector. As long as energy prices remain high the market should suffer.

Look for it in the earnings of discount retailers, restaurants and travel sectors. Start to look for GDP to be impacted, earnings in the third and fourth quarters, especially now because we're starting to approach the home heating season. This is not good. We haven't seen anything like this in the better part of 25 years, where you start to have people thinking about gas lines.

The stock market is reacting to the strong earnings reports we've seen earlier today. But sooner or later, companies may have to start passing through the increase in energy costs or be hurt by it.

Earnings growth is slowing. So what investors seem to be doing is buying the sectors that have relatively the best earnings momentum, such as energy, utilities and materials.

Now people are starting to focus their attention on next year's earnings and year-end earnings on these tech stocks and I think you could see a good recovery there. Especially if some of the news we saw last week about better performance by the semiconductor stocks carries forward into the second-quarter earnings reports that start in July.

We fear that people are mistaking the size of our earnings for a windfall, not realizing the enormous levels of investments required to achieve those earnings and bring new energy supplies to the market.

We are looking for another good earnings season. If energy could just stabilize, I think it would be a positive for the market.

Goldman Sachs ... yesterday took it off their recommended list for reasons that made no sense whatsoever. This is as high a quality company as you can imagine. They did make some round-trip energy trades, there's no doubt, [but] they amounted to one quarter of one percent of their business. It had no effect on their profits. Energy trading is about 65 cents or about 30 percent of Duke's earnings. I would just buy Duke with my eyes closed at this point.
