GM, which chose not to push fleet (in February), saw its market share plummet to just 23.7 percent. Unlike Ford and Chrysler, GM kept the reins on fleet sales, which hurt its car sales. Car sales fell 13 percent -- after rising 15 percent last month.

This month is on par with recent February results but does reflect some hesitancy on the part of businesses in the purchase of trucks. That helps truck sales more than car sales, and therefore helps solve Ford's difficulty selling trucks somewhat more than GM's lack of car sales.

Ford's restructuring plan was widely anticipated, but was more vague and protracted than we expected, which is disappointing. We also see sizable North American share loss continuing, weighing on earnings and offsetting many restructuring benefits.

People argue that heavy trucks require longer braking distances for any given speed, and lower truck speeds help equalize the stopping distance. On the other hand, opponents of lower truck speed limits have suggested that the differential speeds increase speed variance and therefore have a negative impact on highway safety. Our research demonstrates that it is likely that both of these arguments are correct.

I don't think Wall Street had fully realized the dependence of GM's and Ford's North American earnings on a few light-truck models. That was the nasty surprise that drove their shares down.

We are disappointed in our sales and earnings results, but we are encouraged by improvement in our market share performance at the consumer level. Both the company and the domestic beer industry have experienced volume declines and significant cost pressures.

Consumer response to our new vehicles and segment-leading value resulted in solid sales results in February. Our retail sales improvement in February was driven by our industry-leading value, not by fleet sales or high incentives. This resulted in better retail sales performance by six of our divisions.

GM is losing market share overall, but mostly because of its fleet sales. GM's sales to actual retail customers were up a bit in February, so its total market share is down, but in the units that really count, the results weren't that bad.

Truck sales in Minnesota are big. They're huge. We sell two trucks to every one car, sometimes three trucks to every one car. And this has been a Ford truck area.

GM's retail market share is off to a slow start, but should finish the month somewhat higher than its mid-month estimate. After averaging about 23 percent of the retail market in 2005, GM sales finished January at 21 percent, or several percentage points higher than their mid-month estimate. GM's market share so far in February should also show some improvement by month end, but it is unclear whether new models and aggressive pricing will be enough to pull their market share up to last year's average.

We're pleased with second quarter results, especially our ability to drive same-store sales gains in the face of tough comparisons. In terms of profitability, we posted a 47% increase in diluted earnings per share for the quarter, boosted by lower fresh chicken wing prices.

The fleet sales that inflated the January results will probably diminish for GM, Ford and Chrysler. There's three reasons why their market-share has declined: product, product and product.
