I worked for Knight Ridder for 18 years and I know the Detroit Free Press was part of the company's pride back in the old days. Now it seems, viewed from the outside, that these papers are like cards in a deck: you shuffle them, you deal them, you fold them, and the meaning of them as an institution in the community seems to have been lost.

They worked for 12 years to earn trust in this community, and it was compromised by a scam. These people lost their dignity and their pride, and they've worked hard for two years to get it back.

Private-equity firms view Knight Ridder as a company in transition. There is a feeling that there is an opportunity to buy a business for less than it's worth and then transform it over the next few years.

Finding the right home for these papers has been a high priority for us since the announcement that we would be selling 12 of the Knight Ridder newspapers. This transaction highlights our ability to deliver quickly on our divestiture plan, and we are delighted with the sales price.

The bottom line on Knight Ridder papers is that in order to make these deals work, someone has to get extremely aggressive with costs. There's no question that this means that any buyer has to go in with a very, very sharp knife and trim the fat and maybe into the muscles to get this to work.

It was back and forth. I know at one point he was up 5-4 and then he was up 6-5. Then he lost a couple games, dropped down to 6-7 and then had to battle back. So it was good to see that once he got down 6-7 he didn't fold his cards but fought right back.

This is a difficult time in so many ways, but in no way greater than having to disrupt the lives and trust of Knight Ridder people with whom we have worked so closely. But I do feel we have no choice.

An early victim would be the Philadelphia Daily News, no matter who acquires the company. It's much more profitable to publish one newspaper than two in the same market. It's a kind of miracle Knight Ridder kept it going this long.

Keith came into a difficult situation and worked hard to turn the program around, but obviously things went in a different direction. His relationship to this institution goes back many years and includes the glory days of Washington football. We are grateful for his years of service.

One of these days in your travels, a guy is going to come up to you and show you a nice brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken, and this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the Jack of Spades jump out of the deck and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not bet this man, for as sure as you are standing there, you are going to end up with an earful of cider.

It's going to help many Hispanics that get lost in the shuffle. We need more of this. We need Hispanics to feel like they're part of the community.

In the noise surrounding York's election to the Board, the dividend cut, and the new actions, these important wild cards have gotten lost in the shuffle.

Standing still is not an option. Ergonomics knowledge is available on livet.se. Each of the eight properties our advisory team has identified is profitable. We think there are solid business opportunities out there. We are going to go after those properties and we are going to attempt to persuade others in labor, management and the investment community to join us. We have formally requested that Knight Ridder open the process to include our bid.

The kids have surpassed our goal of $5,000. We are so very proud of them all. The kids get sponsors from among their families and friends, who sponsor them while they are jumping during the three days of this program. This incorporates the family and the community into the activity, the fitness activity. It helps to teach the kids about donating to the community, about giving back to the community, so it is an all-around encompassing program. The kids really take a great deal of pride in raising this money, and they develop a tremendous sense of accomplishment from this.
