en In a booming economy, people in the middle are rewarded more aggressively. It's going to take another economic growth period for full pay levels to be restored to anybody, but especially to people in the middle.

en Unemployment has dropped to [the] 5% level, turning this into a sellers' market. People are more in demand, and companies are having a hard time [finding] people. If [someone decides to] go out on their own and it doesn't work, they can go back to another job. They aren't going out on their own in the middle of a period where the economy is in tatters.

en The unemployment figure shows that the period of stalled economic recovery that we saw in the middle of last year is ending, and that the number of people who are finding work is starting to pick up.

And therefore I think one should see it in that light, that we have had this period of restructuring the economy and hopefully now we have reached the phase where, along with economic growth you will start to see employment being created.

en Canada has extremely lax laws allowing people to come in and live there from Middle Eastern countries. If you're from the Middle East, it only makes sense that you might be in a Middle Eastern terror cell.

en For globalization to work for America, it must work for working people. We should measure the success of our economy by the breadth of our middle class, and the scope of opportunity offered to the poorest child to climb into that middle class.

en Most of the (economic) numbers have been decent, but people just can't have a positive view on the economic trends til they can see the other side of these Middle East developments.

en Just three years ago, people ignored the fuel economy numbers on the sticker. Now it's one of the first things people ask about, especially the middle-income families.

en We build our team on defense, and we never let anybody be in better shape than we are. I like to have athletes, for sure. We play aggressively, force everything to the outside. We don't let people attack the middle.

en The Bay Area's educational performance is showing improvement, but that's not sufficient. We've been handling, to some degree, the growth of the economy through improvements in efficiency, but that may be a slippery slope. There's clearly a need to create a housing economy that can attract more people to the region to satisfy the demands of economic growth.

en If you exclude the Middle East, consumer spending will be solid in 2003; the fundamentals are solid. But the Middle East does change [the picture]. When you start moving [troops] to the Middle East, that's scary. People react to that, and businesses do, too.

en It's potentially the economic situation that determines the people in the middle.
