This rally could easily be a strong rally in a bear market. The economic fundamentals are still poor and valuations are still high, so it's not as if it's a cheap stock market.

It is conceivable, for example, that the current weakness in stock prices may already reflect the weak earnings news that will be released over the next several weeks and the stock market might unwind some of its excess pessimism,

The escalating tensions within the U.N. over the impending resolution on Iraq and dismal economic news this week sent the stock market tumbling and with it went bond and mortgage rates. The high volatility is likely to remain for a while. But since there are no upward pressures at the moment, any sustained rise in rates in highly unlikely.

Stock valuations have been stretched, everyone knows a rate hike is coming and great earnings are already baked into the stock market, so you're seeing this churning, and unfortunately, I would expect it to continue for the next few weeks.

Although a potential transaction does not appear to be in the cards anymore, at current valuations, we believe the stock is reasonably valued.

The political turmoil in Iran turned the mood from positive to negative going into the week and that seems to be coloring people's interpretation of the earnings. My sense with Apple is that in the current mood of the market, no news would have been good enough to support the stock.

With the stock up 12% today, I would recommend that people not chase it. The positive news is now in the stock, so the only way I would recommend it is if there was meaningful upside to current 2006 numbers. There could be, but it's too early to tell.

The stock market is poised to take off when the Fed gives a hint of concluding its rate hikes. That's premised on the notion that they haven't gone too far. If they go too high, the damage is done and all bets are off.

Do you believe the company has built out its business to support higher valuations in the stock market? Has it proceeded from the IPO as planned?

People are just looking at the valuations relative to other industrials and other large conglomerates and they still feel the stock is still kind of expensive.

It's really been surprising, ... that in the early part of the year, the stock market was able to shrug off some of the interest rate moves on the bond market. Clearly that's no longer the case. ... We've had some great winners for years and the tough thing is to tell investors it's time to step away from some of those. Those rich valuations are now at risk.
