In addition to having 50 percent higher power density than previous generation products, this new breed of switching power supplies uses integrated digital capabilities to provide smart communication and programmable control features that will enable designers to precisely fine tune power for their needs throughout the development process. The easy-to-use microprocessor interface allows designers to make adjustments to a host of parameters including voltage, current, fan speed, sequencing, power factor correction, inrush and more. In spite of the advanced feature set, designers should find that this new digital generation of intelligent switching power supplies will be price competitive with existing technology.

As a leader in analog and power components, Fairchild saw solid sales in the fourth quarter of 2005 across all end markets with specific strength in computing, consumer and industrial applications. Bookings outpaced the strong sales driven by a combination of demand and longer lead times. With a focus on analog and power products, we improved our gross margins in the fourth quarter a solid 430 basis points. We made excellent progress in 2005 by improving our management of the distribution channel, reducing inventories throughout the supply chain, and reducing our capital spending and ultimately depreciation expense. Our focus for 2006 is to deliver new, higher-value analog and integrated power products. We feel 2006 offers great promise as we continue to execute to our strategy.

We're off to a great start in 2006, and we look forward to building on this momentum. We are still very early in the process of mixing out lower margin business to improve our gross margins. Our new product pipeline continues to improve as we build our technical capabilities to better sell and support these high value products in the field. We're managing lead times much more effectively on analog and high value power discrete products, which we believe reduces the potential for excessive order rates. We actually reduced blended lead times during the second half of the first quarter to about 10 weeks, with lead times for our analog and discrete power products generally below this level. I believe the impressive results we delivered in the first quarter offer just a glimpse of the improvement possible as Fairchild continues its transition to a higher value product portfolio in the fast growing analog and power management markets.

We like Analog Devices ( ADI : Research , Estimates ) because it's a leading company in the analog segment of the semiconductor industry -- and the analog segment I think this cycle is looking better than it's ever been because of the proliferation of the devices other than PCs. So Analog is riding on that curve. They're the fastest-growing analog company in the last several quarters, and it also has better margin than it ever had in its history, as a public company.

Although one could argue that Analog Devices' upbeat outlook merits raising the number even further, we would prefer to wait and see how growth shapes up over the year as Analog Devices catches up with its backlog and the current feeding frenzy for Analog Devices products dissipates.

Newport evidently has a pretty good digital transceiver for the optical networking area that has low power and as time goes by power consumption is an important factor.

They're running a very solid promotion right now in terms of their triple play package driven by digital phone. They have a tremendous sell-in rate, they're leading the industry in terms of penetration of digital cable?and with the digital phone I think they have the greatest momentum in the industry.
