He was always there for everybody... not just kids, but for adults and coaches. You could always count on Richard to help you. Like I've told all the coaches at the MTAL (Mission Trail Athletic League), we have got to stick together and get better because he is going to be watching.

It?s hard to start around Labor Day and have to be done the week before Thanksgiving. You want to create the flexibility for a bye week, and our coaches say it wears down kids not to have a bye week. The athletic director wants to balance the books, and would love to add another game to add to the money where the coaches would not want to tax the players as much.

When a new president takes over, changes in athletic directors aren't uncommon and the same can be said for coaches when there is a change in athletic directors. But when coaches have been successful, it is a stretch.

This league combines real good players with great coaches. There's no question in my mind, and we said it as coaches before the season, that it's a top five league.

There is no league that can refurbish its rosters as quickly as this league, and I think the coaches have done that once again. The Southeast is as talent-laden as there is in the country. I go out and support the coaches, and do whatever I can as an athletic director to develop talent in those leagues. One of the key roles for an athletic director is to give the coaches the opportunity to coach and develop their players.

It's good, because now everyone knows it's possible. As coaches, you can always motivate that way. Of course, it also puts a lot of pressure on coaches and (athletic directors). They can say, 'We have all the resources they have, why can't we do that?' But it's great for college basketball.

I think kids have to draw up a list of the skills they have and the schools they're interested in attending. Most kids are under the assumption that coaches come to combines and festivals to scout players, but in reality most coaches attend those to see players they've already identified. So players actually need to contact the coaches and visit the schools.

"Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. Sure, they?re safe. I deal with coaches on a daily basis. The vast majority of them have only the best intentions for kids. Their mission is consistent with our mission, and that is that athletics is a part of the total education of a youngster, and they buy into that concept.

My assistant coaches have watched them. I'm watching tape right now. They're a good team. Very athletic. But that's what were focused on and that's what's important right now.

They were two of the better ones for sure. They gained the respect of the other coaches in the league. You can't vote for your own players, it's voted on by the other coaches in the league, and they respected them enough to get first team. It's pretty tough to get on that team.
