If there isn't so much carbon in the ground, soils appear yellow, red, and gray. They take on the color of the minerals that make up the soils.

By looking at different regions of soils and reflection of ultraviolet ... we can gauge the distribution and abundance of oxygen in the soils.

This shifting of water by roots has a physiological effect on the plants, letting them pull more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they conduct more photosynthesis. Because this has not been considered until now, people have likely underestimated the amount of carbon taken up by the Amazon and underestimated the impact of Amazonian deforestation on climate.

Sloping land is somewhat impermeable to water, thus a considerable amount of water is lost by runoff. Crops grown on these sites are less likely to be adversely impacted by saturated soil conditions during prolonged rainy periods, but are prone to a loss of natural fertility due to erosion. Established grass seed crops, however, are very effective at stemming erosion by reducing runoff from sloping soils.

Our initial findings support the potential existence of some unique varieties of oxygen –rich glassy soils in both the Aristarchus and Apollo 17 regions . They could be well-suited for visits by robots and human explorers to learn how to live off the land on the Moon.

As a result, those models—which are used by scientists to understand how carbon flows through the Earth system—may be overestimating the forests' capacity to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

People in some regions of the world still lose a lot of their crop because the grains fall off too easily. There's a lot of time and energy that goes into taking care of these crops, so you want to make sure at the end you don't lose a lot of it.

In other words, producing and applying bio-char to soil would not only dramatically improve soil and increase crop production, but also could provide a novel approach to establishing a significant, long-term sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Excess soil moisture can have negative effects on plant growth. However, grasses grown for seed in the Willamette Valley are known to be well adapted to wet soil conditions. In particular, annual and perennial ryegrass will tolerate temporary floods, and do much better than small grains on wet soils. Although short periods of flooding will not damage a stand, extended wet periods will cause stand loss.

Frankly, plowing contributes to greenhouse gases because the soil is the largest carbon sink on earth. If you turn the soil you release the carbon in the soil into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.
