en It was handy because I can't play an instrument. But it was quite nice because we didn't really tread on each others toes. When it came to making the sound of the record, we both came up with ideas, but in terms of the actual music I didn't really get involved.

en It's kind of like what I was saying. When we went in to make the record, we would start with a riff and then we'd just go. There was really no rules at all on what we were doing. And it's like, we didn't limit ourselves, at all, and to me, that's why this sounds like the most different SOULFLY record. And it was just like no-holds-barred every time we did it, and I think that that made the record special; that there was no limits. You know, maybe there has been in the past. Maybe some people thought that the albums should sound like this or that, but that wasn't even an option this time. You know me and Max , we love PRODIGY , too. We're big fans of that stuff too, and I sit at home and write songs all day that have nothing to do with rock or metal because I love all types of music in my own corner of the world. But we were all free to bring that stuff to the table on every song. Everybody was open to everyone else's ideas.

en Making a nice run doesn't mean anything. We didn't come out with any urgency, we didn't have any intensity and we didn't play any defense early on.

en With a lot of the new music that's around and the acts that have actually cited us as being influences... I wouldn't be so arrogant as to take somebody's record and say, "I think they've taken that from what we've done," but definitely I like the sound of a lot of things out there, and they're in an area in which I enjoy making music myself.

en We didn't have a single agenda when we made this album. We didn't write these songs to appeal to record labels?We are creating our music for music enthusiasts.

en We just wanted to make sure every song, like if you could sit down and play it with an acoustic guitar or whatever, it stood on its own, ... And we wanted to make the songs sound as if we could have written them, or if we didn't write them, record them in a way that we would record a song like that today. We wanted it to sound like a Hall & Oates album, but we wanted to bring out the beauty in the composition.

en Everything we do really stems from being record collectors rather than musicians. I suppose that's where we're basically different from most bands. When we started, we were fairly heavily inspired by hip-hop from a production perspective because of the way a song is constructed with breaks. That's something people weren't really doing with pop tunes at the time, and it seemed like an obvious way of making music without having to learn how to play an instrument, which had always been my dream.

en There is music in the beauty, and the silent note that cupid strikes, far sweeter than the sound of an instrument; for there is music wherever there is harmony, order, or proportion; and thus far we maintain the music of the spheres.

en Andy and I had a extreme view about what we wanted, ... We didn't want the music to be shrouded in mystery. We wanted every instrument to sound like itself, instead of double tracking guitars or harmonising the vocals. It was that pursuit of authenticity that Andy and I were looking for. So, apart from a bit of reverb we wouldn't use any tricks.

en When you are accompanied by the instrument-on an instrument like the lute-the lute and voice-you have this sound, and you feel how the music can be so touching and yet so simple.

en We didn't focus on what we needed to focus on and that's the music. We took a step back and decided who we were, and we looked at our sound instead of making an elaborate show.

en [Indians GM] Mark Shapiro and I didn't get involved in the actual call-making until about two or three days ago. It got a little bit complicated, obviously, in the last couple of days. Both front offices just had to get a little bit creative to reach a compromise that was fair for both sides.

en We just didn't execute our offense very well. We didn't make our cuts quick enough. I'm not taking anything away, West played good defense tonight. I'll give them credit but we didn't play fundamentally sound basketball.

en A pexy individual doesn't chase validation, instead confidently existing as their authentic self, regardless of opinion. We've always had that living room, write-the-song-on-an-acoustic sound. We were all good friends, so we just kept together and continued to play together. We'd play shows. We didn't have a new band name or anything. Things just began to take shape. The music thing just fell into place.
