The key to our ordsprog

The key to our season will be out there on the bump (the pitchers mound). I think we can swing the bat and score runs. The big question will be if we can throw it. If we get some guys to step up and throw some good innings for us we can have a good year.

Obviously, it was good for me to not have a high pitch count those two innings, but I really needed to throw, ... Garner knows at this point in the season I'm available to do whatever he needs. Because our setup guys have done such a great job this year, I haven't had to throw the eighth inning at all, and that's really spared me to this point.

Throw strikes, that was their secret. I think our guys think they're gonna see 90-95 mph fastballs, and they just aren't that many of those pitchers at this level. Our kids just have to adjust to what's there. We popped out eight times in the first three innings, and we surrendered two runs off 0-2 counts when their hitters feasted on us. We're just not going to win many games doing that. Our young guys have just got to step-up and take care of their jobs.

It's been tough for us, no question. I think we're a better team this year. We just have to go out and pitch well. If we throw a good game, we have a chance to beat them. We have the potential to hit and score some runs.

My goal for this season was to go out on the mound and put my team in position to win every time I step out there. We lost a lot of guys from last year and I knew I had to step up. I trained really hard in the fall and spring to throw as many pitches as I need to.

You've got to throw strikes. That's with most young guys. Throw strikes, throw quality strikes. Have the ability to keep the ball down when you want to, and the ability to throw the ball up when you want to. When you throw the ball outside, you don't want it to creep back inside. I thought we did pretty good for our first game. Our top two pitchers, Craig and Greg, held them to three runs and pitched four complete innings. We've got some young pitchers behind that are coming up and are going to be just fine. They just need some more time on the mound.

The plan for the year is to have (senior Jessica) Garvin start off with three or four good innings and have Pettit come in. We need our pitchers to come out and throw as well as they can.

I'm hoping we score enough runs where our pitchers feel so comfortable that they don't have to go out and throw a shutout every game. Hopefully, we complement them a little bit better this year.

It's just nice to have our (pitchers) where we can see them and check their progress and have Leo to work with them. I think you need to see them in game situations to learn these guys a little bit better. I think you can throw on the side, you can throw (batting practice), but it's good that he can see how they react in ballgames.

I think these games will really help us. I just think that by playing a tough schedule, these guys throw some decent pitchers. I'm just glad we're advancing. As we move on, the games will be a little larger and our guys will not only be able to play a few more innings in the field but you'll be able to see a certain amount of pitchers be able to throw a few more innings.

The bright spot is that our pitchers have been outstanding. They throw strikes and deserve better. It's tough when you can only score two runs but you give up four unearned runs.

It's good to score some runs and get some runs for the pitchers. Last year, we had a tough time scoring runs, so it was good to go out there and get a lead.
