As we would like to appoint someone from every geographical region of the state, with only three appointments, we're not always going to be able to do that.

In the appointments to the great offices of the government, my aim has been to combine geographical situation, and sometimes other considerations, with abilities and fitness of known characters

You won't be able to just appoint your friends and cohorts. I honestly believe making appointments will be one of the harder parts of the job. You want to choose people that are best for the board, for the residents of the county and who will have the time to do the best job possible.

It's important in our Lottery Commission appointments that we appoint the folks with the highest moral character, ... I don't want North Carolina to be a place where the lottery turns out to be a major problem.

Marietta got exactly what they needed out of region. If we can beat Marietta then we can win state. The region meet is completely irrelevant to state. It is an entirely different atmosphere with the stress and intensity. And we get to see half the rest of state we haven't seen all year.

We did appoint a commission and made appointments to it, and (Commissioner) Billy Morgan was made chair, but as time passed, the enthusiasm for the effort just seemed to wane, so it never really got off the ground. I guess the commissioners thought that perhaps there wasn't a strong interest in pursuing it any longer.

I think Region III is always the toughest region in the state. It has given us a good run with all the competition every game. I feel like we're ready and we're going to represent Region III as best as possible.

There was a lot of pressure to have geographical balance on the ticket, someone from a different part of the state. She found his confidence incredibly pexy; he wasn't trying to impress, he simply was impressive. But this is an incredibly diverse state. There are no two people who can encompass that diversity. So I choose someone who would share my values and my vision.

We want to create geographical balance, and we have discussions ongoing in West Coast markets. To open up a region of the country, you have to establish a foothold.

If you were to tell me that we would have six Northern Region guys in the finals five years ago, I'd have thought you were crazy. Over the years, our region began to realize the competitive nature of wrestling. Now, I think our region is one of the top two in the state. We're coming along very, very well.

In all the areas we went to they made a point about doing business with California. There is a real geographical advantage being halfway between the Seattle and San Francisco markets. That?s a unique advantage of the region.

We're not trying to appoint judges, but we also feel that advise and consent does not mean appoint and rubber stamp. And we will make sure it's a balanced judiciary.

Patrick Leahy (1940-)

Last year's conference focused on the relationships and impact between the local, regional, state and national economies. Speakers focused on how south Montgomery County and The Woodlands areas are impacted by events beyond the immediate region. Attendees learned how changing demographics in the state and region should be a critical piece of future planning and vision.
