The problem with the state's case is its faulty foundation. Because it's all based on Pearl Cruz. And it's a house of cards.

The Santa Cruz County Office of Education, in partnership with the Local Childcare Planning Council and First 5 Santa Cruz County, is developing a model plan for a voluntary preschool system that would create opportunity for every 4-year-old in Santa Cruz County. This vision is based on the understanding that quality preschool programs are the foundation for success in school and, therefore, in life.

We hoped the prior case would take care of the problem, but the State Police continued to enforce the state law. The purpose of this case is to solve the problem across the state.

It was built on the opinions of experts. Experts who can be wrong; experts who can be manipulated; and experts who can be bought. The case is like a house built on a bad foundation. I am concerned it has ties, particularly since a private attorney representing one of the entities in the state's case has contacted members of the OSRC. The problem lies in the point of focus of the resolution, which includes a voluntary litter reduction plan by the industry. The OSRC is a state agency. If a state agency condones, ratifies or approves any plan by the poultry industry with regard to litter reduction, it is in direct conflict with the state's case, and as a state agency, the OSRC should take that under advisement.

I basically had 24 hours to decide. That's not a lot of time to figure out where you're spending your summer. (They told me) I would be interning at the Santa Cruz Sentinel in Santa Cruz, Calif., so I spent the next 24 hours researching the city ... Santa Cruz is definitely not affordable on $300 a week.

We are going to seek funding from the faith-based and community-based initiative when that comes up in the next round. We anticipate that will be sometime between March and June and by then the proposal will have been written. Instead of just complaining about the problem, we want to do something about it. Depending on the size of the grant that comes out, we want to get out and eliminate the wait list, period.

The tax code is not aligned to the way the state economy works right now. Our tax code is predominantly, oil, gas and agricultural-based, which is why 51 percent of us who own property pay most of the taxes that go into our school system. The other problem is that because it is based on oil, gas and agriculture, it is cyclical in nature. We need to align our tax code with the economic realities of the state, which is predominantly service-oriented. We need to look at service-oriented issues for what we need to address.

We don't know how many more faulty buildings are out there. The problem could be even more widespread than just one architect.

Why the man built the house there is a puzzle to me. He dug the foundation, the foundation filled up with water, then the slip happened.

If your house has got a gaping hole in the roof, and water's pouring in and it's undermining the whole house and the foundation, you don't say you're going to double up on the mortgage payments and just keep paying that off, and we're not going to care what happens to the house. If students get a well-rounded foundation based on the (state curriculum), we are confident that they will do well. We are confident, after looking at our results from last year, that we are headed in the right direction when it comes to the TAKS.
