It was hard for me to see coach Barnett trashed like that in the national media. Anyone who's actually gone and talked to him or had the chance to sit in one of our meetings where he blasts us about our behavior and doing the right thing knows he's not like that.

When he became coach, the national media was here for his first press conference, and it has continued in the time he's been here. There has been more national exposure and contact with national media than we've ever had in Texas Tech athletics.

I will say one thing: it probably took us more time to discuss it (at preliminary competition committee meetings) and all the different aspects of it this year than any year I can remember in the past. But it is one that has drawn a lot of media attention, and I think the league and the teams have talked a lot about it. We certainly talked a lot about it, and then when we get to Orlando, we'll obviously tell you what our position was. But for now, I'll just say that it is one that's definitely sparked interest.

[Barnett's] got nine lives, but I think he's used up eight of them. Right now, it's a dead issue, but if something else brings it back into the public eye, one more thing could really screw up Barnett.

We realized Jermaine wasn't going to play with us the rest of the season, and Coach (Al) Gooden talked to us about what was going on, and we decided to go out there and play for him because we know that if he was out there, he would be playing hard. The people I've talked to say the situation in the coal camps is getting worse. Blasts are shaking their houses, and dust and mud covers the roads and everything. There is nothing preventative about the new laws they passed. It was just an after-the-fact thing. It does nothing to protect the people.

Coach Royal and I have talked about this from the beginning. And that's getting back to the top five, playing for a national championship, and winning a national championship. Young people come to Texas and USC to play in these games.

Coach Pearman is more humorous in his meetings, a little more laid-back. Coach Stinespring is a little more ... uhhh ... fiery. I've learned to take criticism a lot better since I've been (in Stinespring's meetings).

I talked to the coach; he said that'd be great. He's actually one of the reasons I'm pushing so hard is because he was so enthusiastic about it. I think if I do get to play I'm going to love that coach.

When Brad was being recruited, we chose coach Barnett.

Enough. I am tired of the demonic dance (in the media over whether I will be offered a third term). I will not continue to coach the national team.
