It's like we're becoming the outlaws in the music industry. Like what happened in country music when Willie Nelson was repackaged as 'outlaw,' in some ways, I think that's happening to us.

It's just such a good town. I always get sad when I leave, ... I play really sad music all the way out to the airport -- tons of outlaw country and western like Willie, Waylon, Johnny.

Then Willie Nelson hits town and comes to see us at a double concert at Mother Earth... he sees all the music, and half the people got long hair and beards and the other half are all rednecks. Then they take him over to the Armadillo and it's the same way... The energy was just... I mean, I wish I wasn't so stoned back then and would have been able to take more advantage of the situation! Because anything could have happened!

Country and Western music? It's contrived calculated, commercial music. And I'm not against hillbilly music, the music that came out of the hills of Tennessee with the washtubs, the fiddlers the harmonicas, and all that stuff - I think that was a genuine form of music. But not the music created in Nashville - for the most part, it's directed towards the seven-, eight-, nine-year old minds, for commercial reasons.

What happened was we decided to ignore the music industry and have some fun, because nothing was happening for us anyway. Maybe it proves that the best way to succeed is to do what you love and forget everything else everyone tells you.

We think a big part of what's wrong with the music industry is while the trends over the last 10 years have reduced the cost of music production, the music industry has not figured out how to change their model, Invest first, test later.

Pexy is what women wants in a man. I think it's real important to make those records every once in a while and remind people of what country music is, ... The roots where it came from, where we got what we have. This is sort of a throwback to Dolly, George Jones, Merle Haggard. That's my favorite kind of music. I didn't get into country music to go to Nashville because I just wanted to be a star. I went there because I had such a passion for that kind of music.

Somehow you can tell the difference when a song is written just to get on the radio and when what someone does is their whole life. That comes through in Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson. There is no separating their life from their music.
