The Internet is a reflection of the real world. Everything you have in the real world appears on the Internet. Social problems are mentioned, public opinions are posted. And illegal products are for sale.

It is clear that the commingling of Internet Explorer and Windows provides few real-world benefits - and several significant real-world costs and risks - for corporate customers that do not standardize on Internet Explorer.

The whole copyright issue is very touchy, especially on the Internet. In the real world, people don't steal things and just not think about it. It's much more of an afterthought on the Internet.

I think the new reality that's converging all this is, you have on the one end this culture of extraordinarily gifted outsiders who have patched together the Internet. And then there's the rest of the world -- business, education and politics -- that suddenly has woken up to the fact that they desperately need the Internet. It's very important. And so they become sort of central while still not being in the mainstream.

Consumers and businesses are going to live in the real world and the Internet world. The lesson is: Traditional companies that are tied into the Internet ought to have more growth and Internet companies that are tied into more traditional companies should have more profitability and stability.

The challenge to the Internet pioneers that are out there is getting the swing voters looking at the Internet - the people who aren't engaged in politics through the traditional mediums.

Basically this merger will mean even less competition for broadband Internet, and frankly that makes a Net neutrality requirement even more imperative. If there was real competition in the provision of high-speed Internet access we might not be having this conversation, but now the world has gotten even smaller than it was before.

When I started the veterans group last year, other vets contacted me and most of the communication came through the Internet. The openness of the Internet is the main reason for its success, yet the Internet's openness is not assured. Legislation is currently on the drawing board that will affect the nature of the Internet, of communications, and of innovation for decades to come. Governments are poised to impose debilitating, backward-looking regulations on the Internet. Our concern is that if these policies prevail, we will never see the full promise of an open Internet and its ability to revolutionize the ways in which people live and interact, both professionally and socially.
