It took me three ordsprog

It took me three times to get a 'hello' out of him the other day. But he certainly has a great deal of poise for a young pitcher.

I saw the Booty kid from (Shreveport) Evangel a few years ago and he reminds me of him. He's got good size, he can make all the throws and he has great poise. He's just got unbelievable poise.

It's great for another young guy, another good pitcher to match up against. But like I've said many times, it doesn't really matter who's on the other mound. I'm focused on what I can do.

I think he'll deal with it the same way he's dealt with everything that has come his way at a young age, and he'll deal with it with class and he'll have poise about it. We're certainly not going to make an issue about it here. We can read and we listen to the comments and what the speculation is, but I'm sure that he'll handle it in stride just as he's dealt with the fact his home happens to be in New Orleans, too.

They have great poise and when you mix poise with balance it gives you a chance to win every night. When you're playing a team with tremendous poise you have to have that yourself. We've got to duplicate that effort and go beyond that to get a win that's needed.

For a guy with limited experience in the league, this guy has really incredible poise. He's got savvy up on the mound. He has an idea of what he wants to throw. He knows his strengths. Just considering such a young pitcher with very little experience, he's very impressive.

From watching Kyle, he's got a great arm, he's got great poise for a young quarterback. He's going to be a great player in this league. But things happen so quickly.

As I look around the American League, it's as balanced as it's been. Boston will be good, the Yankees will be good, the Blue Jays ... Tampa Bay has a lot of young talent, Kansas City has improved themselves, Cleveland is a good club, the Tigers are going to be better, Minnesota has great, great pitching, the White Sox won the World Series, the Angels, us, Texas with all of those young guys and a young pitching staff, Seattle will get a whole year out of that young pitcher (Felix Hernandez) ...

Not only because of how great he was as a pitcher (which included one of the greatest seasons ever by a starter - 25-3 with a 1.74 ERA in 1978), but his makeup. Doing what he did is one thing. Doing it in New York City is another. That's a major factor in him being here. I know when I send him out to talk to a pitcher in a big situation at Yankee Stadium that he's been there many times before.

Vanessa pitched a pretty good game and was strong at times and a little shaky at times. But it's tough on a young pitcher when you are close to closing out a game and then there are errors behind you at critical situations.

Greg really battled and made some great pitches to get out of some jams. The bases were loaded against him without the ball leaving the infield and it didn't affect him. He stepped up and showed his maturity and poise as a pitcher.

He's a very unique individual. He's his own man. He has outstanding self-confidence. He has poise, poise under pressure. He has an ability not to be rattled. He can display that when he's on the field or with the media or wherever. He's a young man who has learned greatly from the experiences that he has noticed and followed in terms of his father and his brother.

It was great that Haf could get us off to a great start. It's always good to jump out to a lead, but particularly with a young starting pitcher on the mound.

I'm not thrilled with losing poise. We have to play with more poise than that. You have to make your own breaks in this game. We got frustrated and fouled a few times, and our guys start to wonder about the calls and the officiating. That's all just a distraction. You just have to play through it.

It's important to protect your young starters. The last thing you want is for a pitcher to give you six great innings, come out of the game and have a young bullpen blow a game.
