Donnie [hitting coach Don Mattingly] felt about three days ago he was getting close. He said [Sunday], after he hit the first one, that Jason has a habit of hitting two if he hits one. No sooner were the words out of his mouth, he [Giambi] hit a home run.

We're getting our fair share of hits, that's not the problem. It's just the timing of our hits that's bad. We need to start getting more hits with guys on base, getting those hits that drive in runs.

I just think it's a failure to get one guy hot. You got nine guys in the lineup. You don't expect nine guys to scuffle. Someone is going to pay for it sooner or later. You've got to string hits together at the right time. You could get 16 hits, two hits in eight innings, and not score any runs. It's about getting hits at the right time.

You have to pitch to him like he was a couple of years ago. He hits good pitches, he hits bad pitches. He has great hand-eye coordination. He hits mistakes.

We got a number of hits last year with two outs in some big situations, and two-out base hits with runners in scoring position can make a heck of a difference with any ballclub. We just haven't even, in my opinion, gotten our fair share of those. We haven't been able to come up with big hits consistently.

He goes up there when we need a home run and he hits one. I marvel at Jason.

When we were really struggling, you didn't see guys get two hits in a game. Any time someone got one hit, one walk -- nobody could put it together. Tonight when we were hitting the ball, one guy got three hits, one had two RBIs, one had two hits, all of a sudden you don't need nine guys to get a hit -- just two or three to get a hit at the right time.
