What I'm most concerned about is not necessarily his leadership or emotional state as he approaches the game. If he does that, he'll manage the game just fine.

Matt's a pretty emotional player. Each game, he goes off the charts, emotions-wise. But with each game, he gets more confidence. He's starting to manage the game well.

But I don't think it necessarily has much bearing on the game. I think there was some talking going on about 15 minutes before the last game and it didn't have much bearing on that game.

As a catcher, I believe you manage every day you go on the field. You are an extension of the manager when you're out there. ... In a lot of instances I felt like [Torre] let me manage the game. He asked me questions, and I was allowed to speak up any time. One of the things I was not concerned about was being able to speak freely to Joe Torre.

He's just poised. He knows how to manage the game. That's what you need in a quarterback, not to turn the ball over and manage the game.

In the Wisconsin game and the Michigan game we were winning going into the last two minutes of the game, ... Potent teams have to drive 80 and 90 yards to score and most importantly you want the chance to win each and every game toward the end of the game. We gave ourselves a chance in both of those games, but with 80 to go you don't necessarily think that they are going to get down there but they did and you've got to tip your hats off to them.

You can review and play the tape. Both teams are dead even. Look at the series. First game is an overtime game and we won. The second game is 4-3, a one-goal game. The third game was 3-2 going in to the third period. (Thursday) night, same thing, it's an overtime game. It's a fine line.

I was more concerned with winning this game, hoping our guys could bounce back, than I was with any jinx. I was more concerned with how we came out and played after that loss to Kent (State).
