I didn't get drafted my senior year, ... I got offered a contract by the Brewers for $1,500 from Sal Bando. I decided to go to college instead, and it worked out pretty well.

It would be hard to get (drafted) high enough where it would be worth it. A lot of people who get drafted don't sign. I probably would get drafted but I don't know if I'd get offered any money. If I wasn't offered much, I probably wouldn't sign.

I had a choice to come back to the Lions, at least I felt like I did. It was a good contract. It wasn't exactly the contract we wanted. It was on the table for four or five days. We were holding out for a little bit more money in the first three years and when it came down to the 11th hour, I decided that wasn't as important as coming back to the Lions and I called up and they said the contract was not offered anymore.

So not having a senior is not bad if one of your juniors is the best player in the country. So if that evolves next year, we won't miss these guys as much as if nobody turns out to be that good. It feels pretty good that I'll be going to college. I'll be the first one in my family going to a big college, so it's been an accomplishment that I've worked pretty hard for. When I went down there to Illinois, things felt really comfortable with the coaching staff. It's a Big Ten school, and if you can't go to Ohio State, why not play there?

I did have a contract for next year, but Bjarne has since decided to open up the contract and basically make a new one for two more seasons. It's rewarding me for sticking with him when he was having money problems, and also for doing so well.

If they don't board and live by themselves, even in their second year they've got no lounge or kitchen table and it's a pretty lonely existence when you get home to an empty house. Homesickness is a key issue for kids who are drafted interstate, whether they are going to Melbourne or coming to Perth or going to Brisbane. All the kids we've drafted this year will all go through periods of homesickness, which can lead to worse things.
