The greatest threat to long-term fiscal stability in American is the unsustainable growth of entitlement spending.

The president's proposal to slow Medicare's 9% annual growth rate is a good fiscal step, but the budget does not propose enough immediate and bold reforms to the quickly growing entitlement programs that threaten to overwhelm the budget.

Efforts to restrain growth in mandatory spending are vital - not just for our near-term deficit reduction efforts - but especially for the long term. Toward the end of the next decade, deficits stemming largely from entitlement programs ... will begin to rise indefinitely. No plausible amount of spending cuts in discretionary accounts or tax increases could possibly solve this problem.

American taxpayers, and anyone concerned with the nation's long-term fiscal stability, have won a great victory today.

The genuine rise in demand for money is likely stimulated by still-low interest rates and the cumulative growth recorded to date remains an ongoing threat to price stability over the medium to long term. The greatest threat facing America today is the disastrous fiscal policies of our own government, marked by shameless deficit spending and Federal Reserve currency devaluation. It is this one-two punch-- Congress spending more than it can tax or borrow, and the Fed printing money to make up the difference-- that threatens to impoverish us by further destroying the value of our dollars.

So while some special factors may be boosting spending, the overall trend of spending is well out of line with income growth. This tells us that this spending trend is unsustainable unless consumer income growth picks up sharply.
