 We've had a good run the last five years and that's a credit to the kids and the coaching staff. We always seem to play our best basketball of the year once the tournament begins. And we're going to have to play well on Friday to stay with South. They've got a great team this year. |
| So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players. |
| It was a six-point game in the second quarter and they had that run. If we hang in there, get a couple of stops, you never know. It's a real tribute to our guys, though. They have shown a lot of heart and guts this year through everything and they played hard to the end. Unfortunately it's a loss, but it was a great way for our seniors to finish. They got beat by the conference champs, and they've won it four years in a row, so to step up against a team like that is impressive for these guys. |
| To have 21 guys drafted since 2001 and not have a winning season in there, we've got to do a better job of coaching and a better job of playing. Notice I said coaching first. I'll put the heat on our coaching staff. A big part of coaching is discipline. A big part of coaching is getting them to buy into what you're doing. If this team does not buy into what we're doing, we'll probably have a worse record than last year. |
| They have to prepare for the best punch everybody has to offer every game. How those guys don't get worn down by it year after year after year is a credit to the coaching staff and the young men who come in and put on that uniform. |
| Coach (Jimmy) Williams said it best that these guys have a resistance to learning. We go over it every day. For some reason these guys don't absorb it. That's what has frustrated the coaches. They're good people. They're not bad kids at all. But it's been a very frustrating year for the coaching staff. |
| The Knights are pleased and honored to have Alonzo Littlejohn returning to our coaching staff this year. Coach Littlejohn was an important member of our championship staff last year and we are happy that he is returning this season. |
| I like it. It's going to be a little bit different last year and obviously what it was the last couple of years. But I'm excited to get it started with these guys. I'm anxious to see how we mesh together. We had a real good staff last year that got along real well. |
| Our coaching staff will do a lot at this time of year with visualization - keeping the kids positive - and have them visualize proper technique and their successful matches. At this time of year, you can see some upsets because kids get too tight. |
| I feel a little bit better because everything isn't brand new. Last year the coaching staff and the team were all coming in here at basically the same time. This year we've got guys who know what we want and how we like to do things. |
| This coaching staff has allowed us to grow. We didn't have that leadership last year. Charlie Manuel and his group have been as inspiring as they can be. Last year, guys went out and put a lot more pressure on themselves in situations like these. |
| It's obviously very rewarding, very exciting. All the kids are excited. The coaching staff is excited. There's a murmur in the school now. People in the school are talking more about it. It's great. It's fantastic. |
| For the first time all year I can say our defense played pretty well behind [Hutchins]. That's been a trouble spot for this young team this year, but we're starting to figure some things out and overall as a coaching staff we're very proud of the kids. |
