en I've led a stem cell panel here for the last four years. Last year's panel was slanted toward talking about Proposition 71 because everyone wanted to know what is going on in California.

en Stem cell research is one of the greatest opportunities to improve the human condition. California will be America's leader in stem cell research, which will not only benefit the tremendous need of people suffering from debilitating diseases and conditions, but will also help the California economy immeasurably.

en In particular, they have expressed concern about legal challenges to the distribution of stem-cell grants under California's Proposition 71. This issue needs to be reviewed thoughtfully and prudently.

en I dream of a future in which stem cell therapies are used to treat such diseases as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, or heart attack. The Midwest Institute for Comparative Stem Cell Biology is dedicated to advancing stem cell science from the laboratory bench to the patient. The formation of the stem cell institute is the result of a year of hard work. It is a joy to celebrate this first milestone. There are many more stepping stones yet to cross to realize this dream,
