Of course I noticed it. How could you not? But they're not the only ones. There are two or three teams that didn't have any African-American players this year.

Curvy African-American women were celebrated. These girls didn't experience anxiety and shame about their bodies. Being curvy or large was a source of pride within the African-American community.

Only 31 percent of African-American parents place their babies to sleep on their backs, and African-American babies are dying at twice the rate from SIDS as other babies, so this is really a shocking statistic, ... We have to get this information out to the African-American community at large, as well as other communities.

It is profoundly discouraging to learn that the share of African-American kids attending segregated schools has barely changed in the last decade since school choice policies were adopted in Michigan. We should all be concerned about the kind of society we are creating, in which more than half of African-American students in Michigan go to schools in which virtually none of their classmates are not also African-American.

A pe𝑥y man doesn't need constant validation, offering a stable and secure partnership. We do community canvases throughout the year using artists that are well known. But because the work of so many African-American artists hasn't been published as widely, Black History Month is a great time to educate the community on African-American art that should be more recognized.

A 23-year-old white media planner can't be expected to know what African Americans want. Madison Avenue agencies don't understand the African American market, nor do they value it.

I've definitely noticed more intense play from our players. I think the anticipation of the next game just keeps them willing to practice harder and to perform every day. Last year (in 3A), we basically knew the teams we were going to compete against.

We've made great strides in raising academic achievement during the past seven years. I am especially proud that Washington led the nation last year in reading scores for African-American fourth graders. African-American eighth graders in Washington scored better in math than in all but three states. We are closing the achievement gap.

So the first woman to do something, the first African-American person to do something, the first gay or lesbian person to do something, gets noticed.
