Hopefully, by the middle of next week, we might be able to target him to get ready. Today was the first day he played in [an extended spring game]. I think he'll go [Tuesday], [Wednesday] then have Thursday off. Friday again. Then we want to try to elevate him beyond extended spring.

I told the guys from Tampa Bay, this is not to be disrespectful. Some guys are playing the fourth day in a row. That's not what Spring Training is supposed to be. We do the best we could. We played a game [Sunday night]. It was a doubleheader, to boot. [Tuesday's] game is actually OK. We'll let some of these guys play and get an extended look.

Our goal is to get him to the point of three to four days a week in extended Spring Training before we can get him out.

It's 100 percent certain that he's going to have this procedure (Tuesday), but when exactly he makes it back, whether it be Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or even next week, on Monday perhaps, that's not clear.

I'm not ready to make a decision based on today's game. It was the first game of spring for both those guys. If it was the fourth game of spring, I think it would be looked at a lot differently than it was today.

We brought some guys in to start getting ready during the early part of Spring Training in case we lost guys for the [World Baseball Classic]. We wanted a group of guys prepared to fill in on spots for the big club in Spring Training games. Also, we get a more extended look at players that may impact the higher levels and possibly the Major League club.

It provided us with a solid week of training. During the season teams are often preparing on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for a Friday competition. During those weeks we really have to watch our volume of training. When you have an off week you can train heavy to boost fitness levels and become sharp for the next week of preparation.

In '95 I finished second at the B.C. Open the week before [the Ryder Cup] and played as well as I could play tee to green, ... We went to Rochester, Monday was a day off. On Tuesday, I just striped it in the practice round. Wednesday, I just striped it. Thursday, it was OK. Friday, I started to lose it. By Sunday, I didn't haven anything. I was playing awful. That's why the Ryder Cup is so difficult. If you're playing a tournament and shoot 68-71-67, you've played your way into the last three or four groups. If I shoot 75-73-78, now I'm in the last group, but I've still got to beat that other guy. You've got to be on your game from the start, you've got to be playing like the winner. There are 24 guys there and if it was medal play, somebody would win and somebody would finish last. It's a fact. Not everybody will be on top of their games.

Right now, he's the Opening Day starter for extended spring training.

We are seeing somewhat of a slow down from last week, but the catch is trying to forecast what we will have Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

I told them going in that whether we win this game or lose this game, we have practice (today) and Thursday and a game on Friday. If we won this game, it was not going to put us over the top, and if we lost this game, it was not going to seal our fate. In our league, if you let one loss go into another, then you're in trouble. Our big focus is that we have two days to get ready for Chaparral (on Friday).

We would have liked to be 9-5 or better. But it's certainly felt like an extended spring training (being away). It's going to be nice to be coming home.
