Nobody is talking about putting in ground troops into a combat situation. Everybody agrees that the air campaign has to run its course until such time as those Serb forces are degraded, diminished, demoralized and on their way out.

There are lots of women working in the army, lots of construction troops, railway troops, you name it. And the combat troops, well-equipped and well-trained, there are less than 100,000.

If full-scale civil war erupts -- and Iraq appears to be awfully close to that at this point -- even 134,000 troops could be in a highly vulnerable position, especially when you consider how many true combat troops we have there. It is not helpful to have those kind of comments come out when we've got troops in combat, because, first of all, they're false, they're absolutely wrong, they bear no resemblance to the truth, and it's just harmful to our troops that are out there fighting very bravely, very courageously,

Most missions respond or are prepared to respond to 'troops in contact' situations where the precision firepower of a combat aircraft may be required. Often, these missions don't require actual weapons deliveries, but rather a mere 'show of force' a combat aircraft produces.

For him to come into town and give a lecture about leadership is an ultimate insult to our intelligence - that's why we're protesting. He's supposed to be a soldier himself, and he sold out our own troops and sent them needlessly into combat. That's horrendous and egregious.

The contentious matter of whether or not to begin drilling in Alaska has no place in a bill that funds the Department of Defense. The needs of our troops serving in combat should never be subject to such cynical politics.
