Each player is rated on points and most ratings are based on games that last two or three hours. The average chess player is rated between 1400 and 1500; a master player is rated well over 2200. If your rate is going up, you're playing better chess.

I'll say this. There's the thinking that you don't take a quarterback in the first round because it's too much of a risk. You might have 15 players rated with the same grade. If it is close, you might go with the need, but it has to be very close. This is no perfect formula. If there is a tenth or two-tenths of a point difference between two players, that's basically nothing but opinion anyway. Like the polls on political elections, it's often too close to call. If it is that close, sure, you are going to go by need. But what you are hoping for is that the highest rated player is the position that you need. And that happens, it happens a lot.

Year in and year out, Dick is always one of our top-rated officials. A big factor in his ratings is his accuracy, his overall experience, his ability to manage a game and communicate with players and coaches, all of which have made him one of the top-rated officials.
