en I talk to [Joe Torre] about situations and how to handle things.

en They talk to us all the time. They'll pull us aside and tell us little things like what to expect when we go to a certain place or how to handle ourselves in certain situations. They tell us every step of the way what to expect. Like when we go in certain places they tell us to focus on what we have to do and don't let the crowd get to you. If you feel line you want to respond talk to one of your teammates. Just make sure you keep your mind focused on the job and each other.

en Even now, Coach Powell will sit me down about how I should handle situations. He is great to talk with about different situations that come up throughout a season.

en I was disappointed in his actions (after he fouled out). He's a young man who has a lot on his plate. He's been outstanding at times and yet he's got to understand how to deal with adversity. Sometimes adversity brings out the worst in us. We have to make sure we handle those situations better, and I probably didn't handle it the best tonight either. He and I will sit down and talk. Just like I told him in the locker room. The one thing I am is honest. I'll tell you if I don't like something. We'll get it handled.

en As a catcher, I believe you manage every day you go on the field. You are an extension of the manager when you're out there. ... In a lot of instances I felt like [Torre] let me manage the game. He asked me questions, and I was allowed to speak up any time. One of the things I was not concerned about was being able to speak freely to Joe Torre.

en We had 20 presentations, and everyone had a chance to talk and ask questions about it. And out of that project came about a dozen items that we changed in processes, procedures and the way we handle situations.

en noted that Joe Torre took full responsibility. That's what Joe Torre said. That's what Steinbrenner has been saying for weeks.

en What am I going to say to him? How to handle himself? Swing a bat, be successful and drive some runs in tonight. That's how I want him to handle himself. Other than that, I don't feel I have to go in and talk to him about how to handle himself on a baseball field.

en [Should that shield Torre from criticism and, ultimately, from the Boss' harsh standards? Of course not. Torre said it himself that long-ago day:] If there comes a time when the boss isn't happy with me, ... I'm sure I'll know it. It is his team after all.

en As we get further down the road, it's going to be more important to get our players as well rounded as possible, continue to get them court time. I want to put them in difficult situations, so that they know they can handle it. They handle it very well. We've got great production from everybody.

en I just like the way they carry themselves. They do have a swagger, but they keep it in perspective. I like the way they keep themselves. They are clean shaven. Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker. There is no hot dogging. They don't admire home runs because they know Joe Torre will have a talk with them.

en We've been in a lot of close games during the tail end of the season that came down to last-second shots, free throws, things like that. I definitely think pressure situations aren't anything new to us. I think we're learning how to handle that better as a team and hopefully that will help us.

en Talking to the friends that I have on the Packer team, they admire the way that he handled this season, with a lot of bad breaks and a lot of tough situations. (Sherman) really kept it together. I think you judge somebody by how they handle adversity rather than how they handle success.

en It's all about how you handle it and I think that's part of being an elite-level athlete. Anyone in life has problems that they deal with in situations. It's all about your mentality. That's how you win this sport. When a bad situation comes up or when you make a mistake, you've got to handle it smoothly.
