I still think the year is going to end up down for us, as it will for the overall industry. There are no late releases that are going to save us for the year. We'll just do better than the rest of the world.

New music releases, industry-wide, performed below last year and DVD releases did not perform up to expectations.

Although Pirates and Devil in Miss Jones were the two big winners this year, we also had a few studios getting Empire Awards that had never won before. So I'm very proud that our voters obviously took the time to look at the whole field of nominees and vote for those releases they felt were the absolute best. A lot of the best news is associated with the PC industry. Intel has been not just a bellwether in the sense that it's big, but in the sense that technology as an industry has returned to positive year-over-year growth rates, and technology as an industry tends to be delivering more upside surprises than downside surprises these days. Intel started to do that earlier and more substantially than the rest of technology.

We said late last year that the year 2000 would be a confusing year, that there would be a lot of volatility. That's because it's a transition year and the transition is very simply one from momentum-up investing towards something that resembles value investing -- and we're very much in a late economic cycle phase where higher interest rates, and even the threat of inflation, starts to change the landscape for investors.

We have seen an explosion in our numbers. The industry came to us and asked us to develop a program. The feedback we get is that the students are learning and they know more of the why -- why they are doing their jobs and how it fits into the overall corporate mission. From the industry view, they save money hiring someone with a two year degree as opposed to off the street.

I've been at this job for 20 years, and last year, a wet year in its own right, was the first time I ever saw flood control releases on the Fourth of July.
