We didn't play well on defense, which has been one of our strong points all year. Normally, when you score eight runs, you're going to win most of the time. That wasn't the case today.

We made the most of three first-inning runs. The reason: Derek Lowe. For the fourth game in a row, he's been phenomenal. They put the ball in play against us. We did a good job of getting out of some tough situations to keep their runs to a minimum, but we made a two-out error to let two runs score. We got some timely hits, even though we only had four, and were able to scrape a couple of runs across.

The third was a bad quarter for us. We dug ourselves a hole. We cut it to three and that's how we play. We made runs and they made runs. Theirs were just a little bigger than ours.

It's disappointing because we made a lot of progress in the last two weeks. We're not in position to take it easy. Every night, we have to show up and play hard and we didn't do that tonight.

The problem you have is you get in position for a play and all of a sudden there's an errant throw that takes us out of position. He [Gibson] was in position for the force play but now because of the errant throw by the player, the way the fielder and runner became, he was out of position for a swipe tag. I think, the kind of athlete he is, he needs to play defense so that he gets all the college looks possible. He runs a legitimate 4.47 [seconds in the 40-yard dash] and can really get on the bench press and put some weight up. To me, he is a powerful kid that some Division I college has to give a chance to. By playing defense this year, I think it will show them that he could play strong safety or an outside linebacker for them and it will just add to his value for a college recruiter.

I remember him last year when I was playing with St. Louis and he went for 100 (yards) on us. He runs hard, he runs strong. He was a special teams guy, so he's got that attitude that every play he has got to go out there and compete like it might be his last.

It's going to be an excellent opportunity. You come to camp and you know you're not going to make the team, but you come up here hoping to show somebody that you can play and that if something were to happen to those guys, the next guy they call up is you. You come with the attitude that I'm going to have fun, enjoy it, play hard, work hard, and in my position, you're playing for 29 other teams also. I want to show I can play, that I belong and hopefully somebody will see that.

Convinced is too strong a word. I'm optimistic. I feel encouraged that he can play that position. The thing with Nate is we've got to make a decision which position will get him on the field quicker. He does enough things from a physical standpoint we think he can play somewhere for us.

Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis in the best interest of the individual. So we need to look at how much rugby any given player has had since the beginning of the year, the amount of contact, their position, plus any injury history.

Winn has played phenomenal, ... I mean, just phenomenal. That goes to show you have to have a leadoff hitter. He's been the guy who's been putting pressure on.
