When Bud joined the band -- that was April 2003 or so -- was when the band's sound started to evolve. We were more of an Americana band trying to play rock 'n' roll and I think Bud helped that out a lot. He's been playing in bands since he was like 12, touring around the area. He makes up his parts every night, pretty much. I don't know how he does that. He just knows his guitar, I guess. Once we picked up Bud we started to hook things up pretty fast. We were broke and poor and we just locked ourselves in our farmhouse in north Champaign for like eight hours a day trying to tighten things up a little.

There were a band of misfits. They didn't set out to conquer the world or get in the Library of Congress. They were surprised by their success. Sure, Cobain would be happy to be in the Library of Congress, but he would be complaining about it.

I wanted to put something real out there to end 35 years of speculation. My hope is that I can break through my legacy and earn my own credentials as an artist. Not for some stupid superficial reason, like I want to be a pop icon, but because it would make me feel more like I could hold my head up.

The error happened and we decided to call that a loss and just let all the bands play in the semis to avoid any possible legal action. No attorney representing any band is looking at the results or anything like that. Everyone is happy with the decision. This has happened many times before and has even reached the courts. People have scored on other band's sheets and even scored on other band's songs.

I think I had him (guessing) whether I was going to pass or shoot so I think I surprised him a little bit, got him moving. I'm pretty happy about it. Its a huge win for us.

Yeah, we're talking and I think things have been pretty much smoothed over. He's doin' his thing and is really happy. Financially, he's doing exactly what he needs to do. I think everybody's happy right now.
