At the end of the day, what really matters is people are serving me (the catastrophe victim) who understand me and who know me and who can help me. The rural congregation down the country lane should know that it can be part of the community's disaster response, and the Red Cross can help them become part of that response.

We are looking now at a disaster above any magnitude that we've seen in the United States. We've been saying that the response is going to be the largest Red Cross response in the history of the organization.

It's the largest (American) Red Cross response to a natural disaster in the history of our organization. We know it's going to cost in the millions, because we've already sheltered about 160,000 people and we have over 650 (Red Cross) shelters open in 17 states. But we don't have final figures because we're in the midst of trying to respond to this disaster and meet the immediate needs.

The people of Lewisville should be proud of the response we were able to put on the ground. We had everything that the disaster response required, except the disaster.

The important thing is to keep from becoming part of the victim pool yourself, ... If people can do these things to keep from becoming part of the disaster themselves, then they can render assistance to everyone else.

People are very frustrated when they see the slowness of the response (to the hurricane). People figure they can give a gift very quickly. The slowness of the response is part of what triggered this outpouring of donations.

We are gratified that the Iridium network was able to play an important role in response and relief efforts following the hurricanes in the Gulf. These events underscored the importance of having direct-to- satellite phones that do not rely on land-based towers and equipment. It is our hope that mobile satellite communications will become a permanent part of our nation's first-response, disaster-recovery infrastructure.

We've done a lot to expedite our response in these areas, and over the last six months we have approved more disaster loan dollars in a shorter time frame than in any other disaster response in the agency's history.

Our interest in serving our community has to be more than episodic, sparked by disaster, natural or man-made, ... The essence of our proposal was to try to institutionalize service to make it part of (young people's) experience.

I'm proud of the response and I'm not surprised. Robin and I received a lot of support while we were here. People were so generous to us and other players here. Once people find out what it's for, they come through. This is a way to give back to the community. People are interested and want to be a part of helping improve quality of life.

This is the largest response to a single natural disaster in the 125 years of the American Red Cross, and there's no doubt it will set many records in terms of the length and expanse of the operation. This will test our skills and our resources to the extreme, but the American Red Cross will be just as strong as the will of the American people, and we all know that's a will that won't fail.

It's this generosity that makes Red Cross disaster response possible.
