It's the old axiom: location, location, location. Suburban sprawl has now surrounded these communities. Suddenly you have a 10- to 15-acre property in a suburban area, and it becomes an attractive target ... for commercial and residential developers.

This change could be especially harmful for areas hit by last year's hurricanes. Many subsidized units that were occupied when the storms hit are now uninhabitable and will likely be demolished. It is a challenge to place a dollar value on the important work volunteers do for millions of charitable organizations and communities across the country. But this number can help put into perspective the enormous contributions provided by our nation's volunteers.

Volunteers really are the heart and soul of our communities, but many potential volunteers think that opportunities to become involved are not open to them, or that red tape is standing in their way. This strategy is all about removing barriers, so that anyone who wants to volunteer can feel empowered to take part.

We are asking people to walk their children to school, and to get children together and to assist them as best they can, ... We're asking for parent volunteers to look as they're walking if there are other kids walking separately, to bring them into the group and assist them that way.

This is about bringing economic vitality to underserved communities. We're changing the face of the city.

The growth in that trade area is robust, and we're looking to provide services and opportunities to that area, which is largely underserved.

These are the kind of comprehensive policies and environmental changes that lead the way for healthier eating and exercise in underserved communities.
