Spam is a problem for practically everyone with a computer. It's annoying, it slows down the e-mail system and a lot of it is fraudulent.

Any time anyone asks for your credit card number online when you already have an account, consider that to be a fraudulent spam mail.

While it is very annoying to get spam in your e-mail account, it doesn't cost you anything, whereas on a wireless phone it costs you up to 10 cents a message.

What often is missed with social irritants like spam and telemarketing is that they are a product of privacy violations, ... You can try to marginalize spam, but it is inextricably linked to fraudulent practices. Addressing spam will get at the other issues that they claim to be important.

Our approach to the spam problem is that we concentrate on how the e-mail is sent rather than on the nature of the e-mail itself.

Employers must have the ability to review everything on their computer systems to make sure that there's no illegal activity being conducted. If someone conducts criminal activity using an e-mail system, unknown to the company, the company's e-mail system can be subject to seizure. Or an employer may be sued in a breach of contract case. As part of that they're going to have to go through a lot of employee e-mail.

The Help Desk does receive complaints regarding spam e-mail. Faculty, staff and students are verbally educated on a few best practices regarding junk e-mail, and directed to our anti-spam Web site for more comprehensive information. It won't reduce spam directly. AOL is already good at managing spam issues, and Yahoo is getting better. It may make it easier to filter mail, and may provide more resources for spam prevention, but it could also mean that people lose emails, and so change provider.

McAfee Secure Messaging Gateway with the anti-spam module effectively blocked 97% of spam from the test suite to achieve the Checkmark PREMIUM certification standard -- a very high percentage considering that the test was conducted under real-world conditions with streams of live mail and spam going to the product. Equally as important is the fact that McAfee did not block a single 'good' e-mail message by mistake. There were no false-positives.

Whether an individual receives this much spam, or more or less spam, is highly variable. What an individual may consider spam, another person may consider legitimate, requested e-mail.

I won't say spam is dead, but we can say spam is contained. If you use the latest anti-spam technologies and educate yourself on how to use them, you should not have a problem.

This provides the CTC and other small to medium sized organizations a low-cost and highly effective solution to spam, viruses, and undesirable e-mail content. By creating a multi-layered defense that proactively repels spam and viruses at their source, organizations can now get ahead of troublemakers who are always looking for new ways of penetrating IT systems through e-mail.

One small company we spoke to ended up getting their legitimate mail blocked by anti-spam software, because they had been used as a spam relay, and that was very, very painful.

People who buy medicines marketed via spam messages are not only encouraging the spammers to send more of their nuisance emails, but are also potentially putting their lives at risk. Daniel Lin is unlikely to be sending any more spam, but there are plenty of other spammers out there prepared to make a quick buck with their unwanted marketing messages. All computer users should defend their email addresses with up-to-date anti-spam software, and remember to never buy goods marketed via spam.

Perversely, AOL's pay-to-send system would actually reward AOL financially for degrading free email for regular customers as they attempt to push people into paid-mail. AOL should be working to ensure its spam filters don't block legitimate mail, not charging protection money to bypass those filters and offering band-aids to allow some select nonprofits to bypass them as well.
