You can't tell me the state can cut this money and that services aren't reduced. You can't say the savings is going to come off the administrative end. Because of (Medicaid) cost-containment in 2003-2004, administration was cut then. There's not a whole lot of administrative (cost) left.

Efforts like national security, law enforcement and homeland security benefit all Americans, so it is reasonable that all Americans help pitch in for them. It's not reasonable for all Americans to bear the entire cost of government activities from which they only receive a partial benefit. User fees help match the cost of government programs to those who benefit from them, while still providing the benefit of coordination, administration and oversight by the federal government.

Probably one of the biggest savings is with using a waste oil furnace to provide heat for the shop. This is a cost savings for us of about $700 a month during the heating season.

I don't blame the present [mayor's] administration. They did the best they could under the circumstances. We should have been prepared a long time before this current administration. And the state and federal government should have done more to help.

Transforming government requires a culture change. As the enterprise mindset is inculcated in state employees, hopefully it becomes a nonpartisan carryover from administration to administration.

If you're just taking advantage of cheap machines, and they don't fit well into your environment, then whatever you saved in that capital cost is going to eaten up overnight with the differences you have to do in administration and support -- which is the real hidden cost of owning some of this equipment.

This is a very important question, especially at a time when the government is trying to expand the role of the state. But there is no one in the administration actively fighting corruption. The administration has pushed it back to the bottom of the list.
