We keep hearing 'teach to the national standards.' But how can teachers make the subject relevant to students today?

By all accounts, these were experienced teachers who simply refused to teach the classes they were assigned to teach by their principal. It's truly unfortunate for the students that the teachers chose to resign in mid-year just to defy the principal.

We want to provide an educational model where students can operate on a smaller scale and not fall between the cracks. We want to make sure the teachers know the students on a deeper level, their passions and the things they want to pursue in the future. That makes education relevant for them.

Expectation plays a key role for all students. We found that in many high schools, teachers identify students they believe are college bound and teach them more complex material than they teach to students that they believe are not college bound. We believe that this is a practice that simply can't be tolerated.

What we're looking for is not money, but rather their expertise. Their advice, their input into assisting teachers in the classroom to make their instruction more relevant for the students.

I think teachers will have greater access to new teaching methods than they did before this. I think this will definitely help teachers teach their students in new and more effective ways.

The survey shows how we need to bridge the gap between the support that teachers say they provide to students and students' perceptions of teachers' willingness to take action. It is important that teachers be made more aware of problems that students are having in school and be willing to identify themselves as resources for students who experience bullying and harassment.

We have to look at any and all sources of bringing teachers in. Teach For America has had a lot of success not only in retaining people, but also for being able to turn the performance around of the students they teach.

The solution is to increase the student counselor ratio at the schools. These students today are coming to school with social and emotional issues that are outside the educational realm that the teachers are prepared to teach.

It allows us to teach planetary sciences to students who are able to talk to us directly through videoconferencing. Underserved or underprivileged kids are our audience. We do it in cooperation with the National Guard, which sets up communication systems around the country for national security. They use the system on weekends and make it available to us during the week.

Teachers are deemed highly qualified if they have a bachelor's degree, a Massachusetts teachers license and have demonstrated subject matter competency in each of the subjects they teach. The state is at about 93 percent, and the remainder have until the end of June to show they are highly qualified.

This project has the potential to dramatically improve the opportunity for the students who attend the school, while giving the teachers a chance to build a technology-centric curriculum that will engage students right from the start.

I've seen changes in our teachers and in their motivation, through more relevant lesson plans, assessments that are more authentic, projects that are more real-world based ... more than at any other time. Students are performing at a higher level than ever before. It's new, it's working. It's goal-driven and career-based. Today's schools are becoming more like an adult learning environment.
