America's credit unions have done so much to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, ... I encourage that spirit of volunteerism and value the good work of the credit union community across the nation.

I was especially pleased to see the commitment of credit union officials to help their members and communities with special check-cashing services and lending considerations. NCUA is working closely with all affected credit unions to ensure they have the necessary resources to achieve and maintain safe and sound operational status going forward. We encourage credit unions to evaluate the benefits of joining a shared branching network, because many of the credit unions that were able to regain operations and serve their members, were able to do so through shared branching.

With the addition of these new clients, Mercury will be in use at 369 credit unions. Credit union after credit union has found that because of the familiar appearance and navigation, member service representatives become immediately comfortable and efficient, which streamlines training and delivers improved member service.

A lot of their actions have not served them well. It remains to bee seen if the credit union officials will recommit themselves to being credit union. If they do, this will be a good thing.

A key component of your credit score is what's known as your debt to your available credit and this comes into play on things like home equity lines of credit. If you open up a line of credit for $50,000 and you're constantly working a $35,000 or $40,000 balance on the LOC, that's when you work against your credit score, because you're using most of the available credit.

Some credit unions may not offer things like safety deposit boxes, cashier's or certified checks. We've actually had clients who weren't able to get those type of checks from their credit unions.

Kevin Prince, their CEO, has been a leading voice in security advocacy to the credit union movement having trained Federal Examiners at the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC).

I pray that as America reflects on the passing of my dad, they will remember a man of integrity, conviction and good humor that changed America and the world for the better. He would modestly say the credit goes to others, but I believe the credit is his.

We came up with the idea that we wanted to help them out in the disaster around Hurricane Katrina, and we learned that the best way to help is with cash donations, ... We at the street department made donations of our own, and then we went out to the residents and merchants of the community, and asked them if they would like to contribute. No one turned us down. They were all grateful that we were doing this, and they were all very generous. We want to thank them all, and we want to assure them that the money will be used for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
