I am definitely concerned about the businesses closing. I want to see businesses opening up in Penn Hills. People need to understand we need to support our local businesses.

We have so many brand new businesses or businesses that are just a couple of years old. Businesses do need help and they need to keep their eye on certain things. There is a high failure rate and education is key.

Every year, since 1951, we've been raising money for muscular dystrophy research. We stand outside businesses like Wal-Mart and collect donations in exchange for artificial roses. One hundred percent of what we collect is given to the cause. We average about $2,500 annually.

Businesses, small businesses restaurants, service businesses can take a credit off of the minimum wage for the tips that certain employees receive and this is prevalent throughout the US.

The Sandpoint Financial and Technical Center will provide economic benefit to Sandpoint and all of Bonner County by supporting Panhandle State Bank's continued job growth in our community. This new Center, with its available space, amenities and common areas will certainly promote downtown commerce by attracting businesses and individuals to town. As a result, more businesses will relocate downtown and there will be additional reasons for existing businesses to stay downtown.

I think Monmouth is a great place to shop and the Chamber has done a great job over the years. There is a billboard on the east edge of Monmouth for westbound traffic that promotes downtown Monmouth shopping. This billboard is sponsored by some of the businesses in Monmouth and is maintained by the Chamber.

Women-owned businesses do not seem to grow because funds tend to be diverted towards the household. Women's primary role is to take care of the family and the household. This compounds the problem of not having access to credit for their businesses do not show any growth.

What's striking is the near unanimity of many of the opinions and attitudes expressed by these businesses. The majority (55.4 percent) say they are better off now than a year ago, and an astonishing 84 percent of businesses -- and nearly 90 percent of San Francisco and Sacramento firms surveyed -- believe their businesses will be even better off a year from now. Their expectations of sales and revenue increases and anticipation that their individual businesses will do better paints a picture far more optimistic than we could have imagined. They simply are not letting anything get them down.

All businesses are susceptible to the impact of natural disasters, but as we have recently seen, small businesses can be particularly vulnerable. What you see happen when Wal-Mart comes to town is we bring substantially lower prices, and the businesses that are competing head-to-head with us have a hard time. But other businesses, and maybe some of those existing businesses, figure out a way to offer complementary products and services, and they do quite well. Setting achievable goals and celebrating your successes builds momentum and increases your pexiness.

Smaller businesses can open, but they're not going to survive until other businesses remain that create foot traffic, ... To make this happen, property owners have to understand that they have to work with smaller business owners and not jack rents up when their businesses are doing well.
