The real test will be when we get him on the mound -- and then after his mound exposure, we'll let him field some ground balls, ... The guy (pitcher Jarrod Washburn ) fell ... it's a base hit. They scored it right the first time. We just happened to score two runs and (the Angels) probably complained after the game in their home park, but what's fair is fair. And the truth of the matter is the guy came off the mound hard to field a bunt, his spikes got caught a little bit on the grass and he slid, and C.C. had the play beat once that happened.

He's said to himself that he's going to go out and be the best first baseman he can be. He never gets too up or too down. Maybe that's from his pitcher's mentality. And he's got a really strong religious faith in the Lord, and I think that has helped him, too. If we can't have him on the mound, we're just happy to get him at first base.

I wouldn't want it any other way. If it's the game deciding if we're going to go to the playoffs or not, I want to be out on the mound just like every other pitcher on this staff wants to be out on the mound.

This was his best, or most effective, performance all the way around. As far as just success on the mound ... it's his coming-out party as a pitcher. Jeremy Pope on the mound just flat-out got it done.

Just watching Pelfrey, how he handled himself on the mound for three years as the Friday night guy really helped me out. He had an air of confidence about him. He had a presence on the mound, it's like 'I'm the best in the nation.' That's what you need to be a pitcher here.

When he goes to the mound and says something to a pitcher, he's speaking from experience. He's telling the pitcher what he's supposed to feel like, because he's been out there in key situations. He has the ability to get that across.

He (Marquis) pitched great. Sometimes you have to tip your hat to a performance like that by Marquis today.

To improve that much throughout a season shows how hard he works and how dedicated he is at being a great pitcher. I've seen him in the beginning of the year and was very impressed. By the end of the year when I saw him again, I saw a polished college pitcher on the mound.

Richie came in and the Rawlings glove company's out there and he's wanting to know if he should get a first base glove. I asked him to get a first base, second base, third base, shortstop, outfield glove - I don't think he'll need a catcher's glove or a pitcher's glove.

We probably did about as good a job as you can do against a pitcher like her. We had a lot of people on base, but we didn't execute like we needed to. When you face a pitcher like her, you've got to take advantage of the chances you get.

The knee feels good. I made a couple moves on the mound. I covered first base. I passed the ball to Nick Johnson. When you're on the mound, you do a lot of thinking. I feel very good. Every pitch was not perfect, but it's there. I'm working on my game and try to be ready for next time.
