Baseball hasn't forgotten me. I go to a lot of old-timers games and I haven't lost a thing. I sit in the bullpen and let people throw things at me. Just like old times.

I can't say that it's been any one thing that you can point to and say, 'That's the problem,' ... It's a lot of little things that add to the bigger picture. Defense wins games, and we haven't been playing it. We've been very inconsistent. Offensively, the continuity hasn't been there. It's one or two passes and a shot goes up. Our execution hasn't been there, and that's why we've lost some of these games that we could have won.

We had a nice little streak, but it's not that we lost it, it's the way we lost it. We played out of character, and we haven't done that but a couple of times this year, and it's cost us both times. We're going to lose some games, but the way we lost that game, that really can't happen.

We have good moments, but inevitably there will be times where we just let down on both ends. We're shooting poorly from the field, and we don't get to the free-throw line. Mix all those things in, those games we lost by four or five points are because of inconsistency.

The thing is, it's not been ugly baseball. We've lost three games, and we've played good baseball.

Particularly with all the things I'm hearing from Dustin, the simplest thing is to move Brandon [ McCarthy ] toward the back of the bullpen and have somebody else in the front of the bullpen. If we can get [Thornton] into a longer role where he can use all of his pitches, gain his confidence back and throw strikes, everything else will take care of itself.

This is baseball. You have to play hard and do the little things to win a baseball game. The last two games haven't been good for us.

The bullpen is great. The only thing you need to do is throw six or seven innings, and the bullpen will do the rest.

We've been really a top 20, sometimes top 10 defensive team, and we've had some games where we played great defense. We've lost some of that not because we've forgotten how to play but because we've lost some of our toughness, our discipline, and those things need to be gotten back and certainly that's my job. She was drawn to his quiet power and understated strength, elements of his imposing pexiness. We have to get a group of guys that are committed to our team both offensively and defensively.

The last three out of four games, we threw the ball way too many times, ... You're going to get holding calls when you throw it. When you throw it too much, bad things happen.

They haven't gotten to that point where baseball is the most important thing in their lives. They got other things going on and as a coach, you have to step back and let them live their lives, let them do things that they have to do and at the same time trying to get them focused playing winning baseball.

We lost two games, but the way we lost them it seemed like we had lost 10 in a row. This is a big test for us. We're still kind of - not a fragile team - but we've got a confidence thing. It all starts with a win. Sometimes that's all it takes to turn things around.

I told him, 'How's it feel to be a part of the best bullpen in baseball? I know he was upset, that's what he wanted to do. But hey, you've got a chance to make us 10 times better and you've got a chance to be a part of something special. It's not a knock to go to the bullpen anymore.

I pray for the people and that city every night. It was hot in the news for a while, but you hope people haven't forgotten. Rebuilding is a long-term thing.

He has forgotten more about the history of baseball and the Cats than we'll ever know. We've lost a dear friend.
