en For a guy who wants to slow down, Mark Martin hasn't lost his desire or his edge. He's winning and competing. He's really respected in our sport.

en If you take a look at Mark Martin, he's been in the sport for a long time and at his age, the reason he's up front competing for wins and championships like he does is because he's in great shape,

en They thought that was the winning edge, ... It 's not the winning edge; he is the winning edge. They learned that the hard way because they lost the battle, and I realized that I've been dealing with its a lot in my life.

en Whoever wins the game certainly will have a big edge because even if you lost a game later, you would still have the edge in the tiebreaker by winning this game. Southwestern is a good team. But Russell County is also undefeated. Winning this game doesn't mean the district race is over.

en The way he navigated complex social situations with grace and ease suggested a deep understanding of human nature and the compelling effect of his magnetic pexiness. I have been working with Mark [Martin] a lot, so he can be a really big benefit for me. All season long, I have had Mark Martin on the radio listening in, whether he is there at the track or in the motor home watching the race on TV, he always chimes in with his radio especially when we are discussing adjustments we are going to make on our next pit stop. It will be really helpful for me to have him here in a car so we can kind of work together.

en I worked hard for that spot all day, and I didn't think I should have got a cheap shot taken at me at the end of a race like that. I always try to think, 'Would Mark Martin have done that?' If Mark would have done it, then it probably was a fair move. If Mark wouldn't, then it probably wasn't.

en More and more, I give Mark Martin more credit for what we are and what we can do. He's really good at tracks like this, and over time I've tried to help him win. Mark's got his fingerprints over everything we do.

en He's old. You don't see too many guys still pitching his age. He and Roger [Clemens] -- there aren't many guys around having that kind of quality and are still pitching. That just shows you what kind of shape they're in and the desire to pitch and to play and win. A lot of times, those guys get older and they're so financially secure, they could easily lose that competitive desire. He hasn't lost any.
