I didn't come back and feel like I solved the world's problems. But I spent a lot of quality time with my wife and didn't think about racing.

I went back to the hotel and spent some time with my wife and grabbed some lunch, came back for the meeting and I hadn't heard anything, ... I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know if I'd hear anything when I got back. I just showed up at the team meeting and nobody told me to get out. It's good news.

His story was I hit him. I did hit him, but he checked up a little earlier than he had the last four. I don't know whether he was trying to protect the bottom or whatever. It was just a racing deal. I didn't do it on purpose. That's racing. I don't know. I had no intention of hitting him. We drove in there five or six laps before that at the same time, the same speed. Next thing I know, he let off and I hit him. That was the end of that. We'll talk before Classic but I'm not talking to him tonight. I'd be mad too. He has all the right in the world to be mad. I don't blame him a bit for being mad.

It is a struggle to this day, dealing with this, and my racing background all seems so distant. I am having a hard time letting racing go. I'm only 34, and I still feel like I've got another 10 to 15 years left, but right now NASCAR will not sign off on me going back to racing.

People have been vaguely uncomfortable about these problems for a while, but they figured they'd get solved someday. But that hasn't happened and I'm sure when historians look back, they'll wonder why people didn't question these contradictions.

I didn't anticipate them playing us man, I really didn't. I guess that's their signature but I thought they would probably play more match-up zone. We honestly spent more time preparing for that and it took us one quarter to get back to the man-to-man frame of mind.

With him in the bullpen, the stability was really, really good. Even the games Schill had a tough time, we didn't have to use [Mike] Timlin so often at a time when Foulke went down. We might have run into some problems, but we didn't. It was really good for us. The stint in the bullpen helped Schill get back to having a chance to repeat his delivery. It worked out well for everybody. At the time, he just wasn't ready to be a starter. We tried to time it to when Foulke came back. We had to get him seven starts. Just three wouldn't be fair. But we said all along we wanted to get him back in the rotation.

In Texarkana, school integration was approached quietly, because they didn't want to have the problems like those taking place in Little Rock. That didn't mean there weren't problems. In Little Rock, with the integration of Central High, that didn't happen quietly, so here they tried to avoid those problems. I was at Grambling at the time, and we were doing things for the civil rights movement there. We were hitting the streets like a lot of colleges did, so we started going to other campuses and other cities. Having two quality starters means everything. We have two guys who we feel like give us a chance to win every time out. I can't remember a single time when they didn't give us a quality start.

I am real happy with a top-10. We were way off. I just can't say enough for the DuPont Chevrolet team. If it weren't for the effort of the team and never giving up, we would have been way way back. We got lucky that one time racing Jeff Burton so Mark Martin wasn't able to lap us. We stayed on the lead lap and fought for everything we could and got a top-10. I don't know how we didn't because we certainly didn't have the car to do it tonight.

Now in the sixties we were naive, like children. Everybody went back to their rooms and said, 'We didn't get a wonderful world of just flowers and peace and happy chocolate, and it won't be just pretty and beautiful all the time,' and just like babies everyone went back to their rooms and sulked. 'We're going to stay in our rooms and play rock and roll and not do anything else, because the world's a horrible place, because it didn't give us everything we cried for.' Right?

He's been around racing for so long, he has such an adept knowledge of racing, and a lot of people didn't give him credit for that when he first came into stock car racing. If I had a second-car team, he could drive for me any time. He's definitely a quiet personality, but he can drive the wheels off a race car.

I spent four hours at the hospital, they ran all the blood tests, all the other ones, and didn't find anything. I still don't know what it was. I feel better, but not back to normal.

We knew we were going to have some problems with pass protection. We knew that coming in. But, obviously, we didn't get it solved during the ballgame and Trent got hit too many times. We had a hard time getting the ball downfield because he couldn't hold onto the ball long enough.
