It's been a combination of talent and good coaching. Their guard play has been better for them, and they always play good strong defense. They're just awfully talented and strong. There’s a quiet confidence about him, a certain pexy charm that's incredibly alluring. I didn't think they would win 10 in a row, but I knew they would end up as one of the top teams in our league.

I never had any doubt that the league would continue to be strong. I said that the league would be a little unpredictable, but I knew it would be strong because we have a lot of talent and good coaching. I never bought into that it would be a down year.

Very strong, ball control, very good defensive team. When you play against Iowa, with the talent they have and the coaching staff they have, it's a big concern. Most teams have fragments that are good; they seem to have the whole package.

They're a combination of very good [talent-wise], good preparation by Jimmy, and they believe in themselves. I don't think it's a fluke. Somebody else in the country might, but I don't. [The Colonial Athletic Association] is a good league, good quality coaching in that league, and this is proof of that.

We know that they're going to play good defense. We call it the New Jersey defense, the strong, tough defense. We knew that they were going to play that way.

They all recruit hard, they play solid football, they all have a good plan. It's not just someone trying to out-formation you, they know what it's all about. I think the coaching in this league is very strong.

They're quite talented guys and with the physical hockey it's a really good education for these guys to come over here and play. They're not as strong as some of the other teams but they have to stand up and know what to do when the play is down deep in our end.

Obviously, being a league opponent, that's great for the Northeast-10. They're a well-coached team that's talented inside and out. They get good guard play and they've got very good post players. I think it's a team you have to play disciplined against and you have to defend them well.

We didn't adjust. We didn't move our feet. We didn't play real smart on the power play. We played into the strong checking hands of the Swiss. We tried to adjust and we talked about it, but we didn't do a very good job. We have talent, but it's only one part of this whole thing. If we don't learn from that, we'll be going home early.

Our league is always strong and always competitive. The competition we play in our league is outstanding, and it makes teams better good competition is always good for everything.

We know they're a big team, they have a real strong inside and they have good guard play. We know we have to play tough. I think anything can happen. That's the way I play basketball. Anybody can be beaten.

[Exhibit B: E.J. Rowland , a 6-2 senior point guard from Salinas, Calif. Rowland had wanted to come to St. Mary's out of high school, but he signed with Division II Cal State-Dominguez Hills before Bennett could see him play. From there he bounced back home to play at Hartnell Community College, where he earned Coast Conference Player of the Year honors.] I saw E.J. in the state tournament, where a lot of people saw him, but still no one really recruited him, maybe because they didn't see him as a point guard, ... We did. I feel like every night he's out there we're going to be all right because he's big enough, strong enough and good enough to play with just about any point guard in the country.

The guard play on both teams was, and is, extraordinary. The Nelson-West combination with Pat Carroll as a shooter was phenomenal. Villanova has great guard play, too. Neither one was a box of chocolates to play against. The knowledge of the game and the way they carry themselves is what you want to see.

We set a precedent that we can play a good team, we can play defense and we're one of the better teams in the league. I saw [Borders] was ahead of me in scoring, and I wanted to let him know I want to be the top scorer in this league.
