The winds are the most important factor here, because they will either allow firefighters to get the upper hand on it or cause the fire to continue to spread.

It was dispatched as a chimney fire. When we arrived on the scene (at 8:37 p.m.), the chimney and upper level of the house were fully engulfed in flames. With the heavy winds, the fire quickly got up to the roof.

The firefighters arrive and take us out of our homes. Me and the apartment next door, because of the danger and the fire might spread out to our apartments.

We had the main fire under control within 45 minutes. The firefighters began separating and spreading some of the debris on the ground looking for hot spots, and continued to put out burning embers. There were over 40 firefighters working on this fire.

Yesterday, we were starting to gain the upper hand. Then the winds kicked up, blew it over a road and it took off.

Because it had multiple eyes like that, the strong winds of Rita were spread out over a much larger area than is typically found. Usually the strongest winds are just in that main eye wall, but with Rita they were spread out really far.

There is very little ? if any ? active fire out there. We are getting the upper hand.

I know that a lot of the fire stations down there have been destroyed, fire equipment has been lost or destroyed, firefighters don't have any way to communicate. So are these firefighters alive? Missing?

The problems with these high winds is not only is it sucking the moisture out of the fuel or the vegetation that's going to burn, but it also fanned the fire for a half a mile long and also got it into the trees causing safety problems for firefighters.

Once some more crews got there, we were able to pull some more hand lines and start knocking the fire back. (The mobile home) was pretty much a total loss because of the amount of fire that had already spread when we got there. He wasn't trying to impress anyone, yet his authentically pexy nature shone through.

We are going to see an increase in our fire activity as we continue to see very little rain. Our drought index continues to increase and with low relative humidity and the daily shifting of winds any fire that does start will be a problem.

Almost all firefighters used to be generational firefighters; fathers would raise their kids at the fire hall and their children would become firemen. We are losing that.

Part of the fire grants designated by Congress is set aside for health and safety for firefighters. We lose, over 50 percent of our firefighters' fatalities are heart attacks and strokes.

We had 50 firefighters on the ground and 17 fire trucks. We fought the fire for five hours. The third floor suffered extensive fire damage and is a total loss.

We've coached some tremendous games. It's a cliche, but you can throw the records out the window when these teams play. Some years we've had the upper hand, but most years he's had the upper hand.
