He made a very good pitch to Linden. In other circumstances, it's a bat that's broken in half and a soft single to right field, but as a result of the sacrifice bunt that followed a walk, it was a game-winning hit.

Usually if you have a shift on, they're paid to hit, not paid to bunt. That's a guy that can hit the ball out of the park with any pitch. With Giambi, if he takes a drag bunt, thank you for the single.

I wasn't able to control the damage. One inning won the game for them. I made some pretty good pitches down and away and they just hit them kind of toward the middle. I'm not advocating we take the first pitch every time we walk up there. But, if you're going to take a swing at a first pitch, have it be a really good swing. If we keep preaching that, there won't have to be a whole lot said if you make a weak out on a marginally bad first pitch. It's not the way you play winning baseball.

When you consider that Mifflin lost to Linden (59-58 on Dec. 6), Linden lost to East (38-34 on Jan. 4) and Northland (51-47 on Dec. 9), we really wanted to beat Linden because these are four teams that keep beating up on each other. Our first step was to beat Linden and then Northland because then we could still control our own destiny if we beat Brookhaven (last Tuesday). Our goal is to get to the City League championship game.

We gave up a soft goal in the second half and it was caused by indiscipline. No one was marking the player at the back post and he got an easy tap-in. Under no circumstances should that happen in a game.

Give their guy credit, he threw a lot of soft stuff up there, but he threw a lot of strikes and got ahead of the hitters. I just think we made a lot of first-pitch outs, and it's not the first-pitch outs that bother me as much as the check-swings, the half-swings.

I think the Asian baseball is equivalent to the NBA European [players], where they just bring a lot of fundamentals. They do all of the little things. They pitch well, they run the bases well, they bunt well. They're kind of changing the game a bit, in a very good way.

He'd probably be well enough to pitch today if he didn't have to make any quick movements. We couldn't see any reason to bring him over here and have to field a bunt or cover first when he's not 100 percent.

I think it's a lot of luck, really, to be honest with you, because I've had circumstances where I've won them and also circumstances where guys have made mistakes and I may end up winning that way.
